The statements below, contrary to what you have probably been told, are all myths:

A base tan protects you: A base tan is nature’s way of producing sun protection because you’ve been irradiated. However, it doesn’t lessen your risk of skin cancer, and you’ll age your skin exponentially with constant sun tanning.

The number on sunscreen is proportionate to the number of minutes of sun protection: The number has nothing to do with exposure time — it’s about the strength of protection against the sun’s harmful rays. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to sunburn protected skin relative to unprotected skin. Here’s how to do the math — it’s simple, we swear: SPF 15 allows 1/15 of harmful UVB rays to reach the skin. The remaining 14/15 means you’re protecting against 93% of UVB radiation. So, SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 prevents 98%. (OK you got me there…I thought that one was true!)

One application of sunscreen in the morning is enough for the whole day: Reapplying is just as important as the first coat. Sunscreen gets consumed once the light hits it, which means you have to reapply regularly to remain protected.

You don’t need sunscreen during off-peak hours: The sun’s powerful rays can cause damage no matter what time it is. If you’re outside at any point for longer than 15 minutes, you need some SPF. You can still get burned at 8 am as well as after 4 pm.

Sunscreen on your face, arms, back, and legs is enough: That’s a great start, but you should also apply it to the ears, nose, hands and the tops of your feet. And remember your scalp, especially if you have thinning or less hair.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

When scientists in England saw the platypus for the first time in the late 1700s, they thought it was fake . . . and someone had stitched together a bunch of other animal parts to prank them.

Jackie Chan’smother was an opium smuggler, and his father was a spy.

The Atlanta Falcons drafted John Waynein the 17th round of the 1972 NFL Draft. He was 64 years old at the time, but they wanted to symbolize that they valued men who were TOUGH. The league vetoed the pick.

Growing a beard has health benefits such as preventing allergies, asthma attacks and rashes, and protecting your skin from the sun.
_____________________________________________________________________________

GOOD NEWS

The CEO of an apartment operating company called The Connor Group made $1.6 million in the stock market and decided to divide it up among all of his essential employees like property managers and maintenance workers.

On the first day barbershops in Denver reopened, some guy got a $27 haircut and left the stylist a $2,500 tip. He also gave $1,000 to the manager . . . $500 to the receptionist . . . and $100 to each of the other 18 employees.

We’ve seen a few stories about adults parading around in inflatable T-Rex costumes to cheer kids up. But an eight-year-old kid in New Jersey flipped the script. He’s been walking around in one and waving at cars to cheer ADULTS up.

______________________________________________________________________________

BIRTHDAYS

[55] Todd Bridges, actor (‘Willis’ on “Diff’rent Strokes” 1978-1986)

[50] Joseph Fiennes, actor (“The Handmaid’s Tale” since 20170

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

An Albuquerque teenager was praised for his honesty after finding and returning more than

$135,000 in cash near an ATM.

Jose Nunez Romaniz, 19, said he was “Just thinking about it was a prank,” he said. “I just didn’t know what to think to be honest”

The 19 year old did not take any of the money.
