But there is one problem. When you jump in your car after dark, because the low-power lights come on automatically, we sometimes forget to turn on the full headlights, and head down the road with no taillights on. Earlier this year, Canada’s Minister of Transport has announced new rules to make incidences of “phantom vehicles” a thing of the past. Beginning in September 2021, car manufacturers must do one of these three things with all new vehicles sold in Canada:

Have daytime running lights AND taillights come on whenever the instrument panel is illuminated and the vehicle is in operation.
• Automatically turn on the headlights, taillights and side markers in low-light conditions.
• Keep the instrument panel dark unless the full headlights are turned on.

When driving using your turn signals is really important, but did you ever wonder how much it costs you to use them? A YouTube channel investigated, and found while activating a blinker, a driver will use 70 watts per hour. On average, the driver will activate their turn signal for about five seconds at a time, using a total of 0.08 watts in total.

What does that mean? It means the engine must burn 0.00005 liters of gasoline to produce 0.08 watts of electrical energy for the turn signals to operate. So that works out to about 50 cents a yearto use your turn signals- but obviously this varies by how much you usually pay for gas where you live, and by how much you use your turn signals– but the take-home message here is that using them doesn’t break the bank.

____________________________________________________________________________

It’s National Hydration Day!
