Unlike the original Tamagotchi, the new one can go outside its house, celebrate your birthday with colorful balloons and a festive tune, and even travel to different lands.

It can also get married and raise children, who will later grow into adults, and continue the family tree. And the difficulty level isn’t as tough as the original toy. To satisfy and grow the pet into adulthood, you need to keep its hunger, happiness and entertainment levels above dangerous thresholds. When it needs something, it beeps — even when the screen is turned off, which can be frustrating. Just as in the 90s, the gameplay is still very analog. You don’t need Wi-Fi to play a Tamagotchi, as connecting to a mobile app is optional.

The brand first launched in 1996 in Japan and came to America the following year.

WHY BEAVERS ARE BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

A study says beavers are now contributing to environmental issues.

German and U.S. researchers studied satellite images of an area of land on Alaska’s Baldwin Peninsula from 17 years. They found the number of beaver dams has risen from just two in 2002 to 98 in 2019—a 5,000 percent increase.

It’s due to higher temperatures in the area, which lead to more shrub land for the beavers, which provide the animals with more materials to build dams.

The issue is the dams create bodies of water that are warmer than the surrounding permafrost (ground that remains completely frozen) and the lakes therefore accelerate the thawing of the permafrost, which releases greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane into the environment.

In the course of the 17-years studied, the overall water area in the region grew by 8.3 percent—roughly two-thirds of which was due to beavers. The researchers suspect beavers are causing similar issues in other areas of the Arctic.

FRIDAY JULY 3RD

The number of newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. surpassed 53,000 in one day yesterday.
