In an attempt to capitalize on the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, a company designed the world’s first wearable step-counter, a device called a manpo-kei, which translates as “10,000-step meter”. One of the problems with the 10,000-steps-a-day goal is that it doesn’t take into account the intensity of exercise. Getting out of breath and increasing your heart rate may be more important than the number of steps taken. Researchers are currently conducting studies to see whether people who take 10,000 steps a day merely by puttering around their house achieve the same health benefits as those who do so by brisk walking or playing sport.

______________________________________________________________________________

TODAY IS……………….

“Taco Day”, an annual celebration of the great taste of the traditional Mexican dish.

“Vodka Day”, it now accounts for about 25% of spirits sold in North America.

1957, THE SPACE AGE officially began as the Soviet Union launched SPUTNIK, the first man-made satellite, into orbit.

_____________________________________________________________________________

COUNTRY MUSIC NOTE

OCTOBER 4<sup>TH</sup>, 2000 The Dixie Chicks win four honors in the 34th annual Country Music Association awards including Entertainer of the Year;
