The meteor broke into pieces 22 miles above land somewhere between Rochester and Syracuse. The sonic boom reportedly could be heard across much of New York State in in parts of Canada.\u00a0<strong>Bill Cooke<\/strong>, head of NASA&#8217;s Meteoroid Environment Office, told NBC News that the event was extremely unusual.
