\u27a2<\/span> \u00a0A huge, four-foot-tall\u00a0<\/span>beach ball<\/b><\/a>\u00a0randomly showed up in Stoughton, Wisconsin . . . population 12,611.\u00a0 Well, 12,612 if you count “Rolie Polie Ole,” which is what the town has nicknamed their new celebrity “hero.” It all started a few weeks ago when a local Facebook post asked whose ball it was.\u00a0 They never figured it out, but the town has adopted it as their mascot . . . taking turns\u00a0<\/span>pushing it around<\/b><\/a>, kicking it to each other,\u00a0<\/span>taking selfies<\/b><\/a>\u00a0with it, and\u00a0<\/span>signing it<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

All this movement and hands-on attention is rough on Rolie Polie Ole . . . but the local fire department has stepped in to help keep the ball fixed up, patched, and inflated.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s unclear what the long-term plan for it is.\u00a0 There’s been talk of naming a park after it.\u00a0 But the town generally seems content to just enjoy seeing it around town, and use it as a fun distraction from everything else going on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u27a2<\/span> Do you listen to music at a reasonable volume, or are you listening to us at “<\/span>11<\/b><\/a>” right now?\u00a0 A police department in Spain\u00a0<\/span>got<\/b><\/a>\u00a0a bunch of noise complaints last Saturday night after some guy turned his stereo up full blast, and his neighbors couldn’t sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n

They expected to find a big party going on.\u00a0 But when they got there, no one was home.\u00a0 So who did it?\u00a0 It turns out the guy’s CAT knows how to turn his stereo on, and likes using its paws to spin the knob that controls the volume.<\/span><\/p>\n

He explained it all to the cops when they called his cell phone.\u00a0 Then he drove straight home to turn it off, and found his cat rocking out to music all by itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Best Times to Mow Your Lawn Are Around 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.<\/b><\/p>\n

Did you know there’s a WRONG time of day to mow your lawn?<\/span><\/p>\n

Mowing at NIGHT isn’t good . . . partly because your neighbors will hate you.\u00a0 But you also shouldn’t do it too early in the morning, or in the middle of the day.\u00a0 Here’s why . . .<\/span><\/p>\n

If you mow too early, like around 7:00 a.m., the grass might still be wet from dew overnight.\u00a0 And that can clog your mower.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mowing in the middle of the day isn’t great either, because the heat can be hard on the grass.<\/span><\/p>\n

And mowing too late isn’t great either, because your lawn needs time to recover before the sun goes down.\u00a0 It’s more prone to fungus and various diseases at night.<\/span><\/p>\n

So when is the BEST time to mow your grass?\u00a0 According to lawn care experts, the optimal time to mow is between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mowing at that point in the day avoids all those problems.\u00a0 Or if you’re not a morning person, late afternoon is fine too, between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s a Dangerous Sport, and One You May Least Suspect<\/b><\/p>\n

The synchronized swimming competition gets underway this week at the Olympics, and for those who have only a superficial familiarity with the sport, two stories might provide a surprising revelation.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Synchronized Swimming Has a Concussion Problem,” reads the headline in the New York Times. While a headline from the AP suggests the sport known as “artistic swimming” might well be the toughest one at the Games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The reason? It requires “the strength and power of weightlifters, the speed and lung capacity of distance swimmers, the flexibility and skill of gymnasts, and the ability to perform in perfect sync with the music and each other,” writes Kristen Gelineau of the AP.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It’s that “in perfect sync” part that causes many of the injuries, given that several athletes are moving in such close proximity to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n
