{"id":2538,"date":"2018-11-15T05:27:09","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T10:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfcofm\/?p=2538"},"modified":"2019-02-11T10:35:47","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T15:35:47","slug":"cma-awards-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfcofm\/blogs\/country-music-news\/2018\/11\/cma-awards-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"CMA Awards Winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Keith Urban took home the night&#8217;s biggest honour at the 52nd annual Country Music Awards, winning Entertainer of the Year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Facebook video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cma\/videos\/259719244693609\/\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The night celebrated music, but it also aimed to lift America\u2019s sagging spirits in the wake of the recent Thousand Oaks shooting and devastating, fatal California wildfires still raging.<\/p>\n<p>Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley hosted the event, held at Nashville\u2019s Bridgestone Arena, for the 11th year in a row. The party got started live on ABC at 8 p.m. with the pregnant Underwood doing triple duty as host and performer \u2026 and holding the biggest gender reveal party ever. (IT\u2019S A BOY!)<\/p>\n<p>Luke Bryan got the party rolling by opening the show with a heartfelt \u201cWhat Makes You Country.\u201d Bryan said,&#8221;Let&#8217;s do what we do and let&#8217;s be proud of what makes us country tonight,&#8221; and as he began playing, he was joined by several artists, including Chris Janson, Luke Combs,Cole Swindell and others.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Facebook video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cma\/videos\/250162082330781\/\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Going into the evening, Chris Stapleton led the field with five nominations, and he landed three (Single, Vocalist, Song). The other big winners of the evening included Underwood for Female Vocalist, Old Dominion for Vocal Group and Keith Urban for Entertainer of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, before the show got started, news spread that Entertainer of the Year nominee Kenny Chesney was unable to attend the CMA Awards due to a death in his family.<\/p>\n<p>[twitter id=&#8221;1062813395274080263&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>The news comes just hours after Chesney and David Lee Murphy were announced as early winners. The old friends took home Musical Event of the Year for their collaboration on &#8220;Everything&#8217;s Gonna Be Alright,&#8221; the first single from Murphy&#8217;s No Zip Code album. That award was announced during Good Morning America Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>WINNERS<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Song of the Year: \u201cBroken Halos,\u201d Chris Stapleton<\/p>\n<p>New Artist of the Year: Luke Combs<\/p>\n<p>Single of the Year: \u201cBroken Halos,\u201d Chris Stapleton<\/p>\n<p>Vocal Group of the Year: Old Dominion<\/p>\n<p>Album of the Year: Golden Hour, Kacey Musgraves<\/p>\n<p>Musician of the Year: Matt McAnally<\/p>\n<p>Vocal Duo of the Year: Brothers Osborne<\/p>\n<p>Musical Event of the Year: &#8220;Everything&#8217;s Gonna Be Alright,&#8221; Kenny Chesney and David Lee Murphy<\/p>\n<p>Male Vocalist of the Year: Chris Stapleton<\/p>\n<p>Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood<\/p>\n<p>Entertainer of the Year: Keith Urban<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Garth Brooks opened the awards with a tribute to the victims of the California bar shooting that left 13 dead, including the shooter. He said, &#8220;Tonight&#8217;s show is lovingly dedicated to the 12 individuals who we lost far too soon just a week ago at the Borderline in Thousand Oaks, California,&#8221; before calling for a moment of silence.<\/p>\n<p>Paisley pestered the pregnant Underwood with nonsensical questions until she snapped and revealed the sex of her baby (&#8220;Oh my God! Willie! It&#8217;s a willie!&#8221;) This, of course, after Paisley famously let slip that Underwood was having a girl on a previous broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>Paisley presented Underwood with a bubble-wrap dress in case of any unexpected falls. (It got better when she actually wore it and Paisley proceeded to pop away).<\/p>\n<p>Bryan (at Underwood\u2019s request) showing off some major dance moves. Triple dog dare you to Google Luke Bryan floss.<\/p>\n<p>Stapleton dedicated his Single of the Year win to the victims of the wildfires ravaging California.<\/p>\n<p>Hot. Chicken.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Rhett introduced a Crown Royal campaign called Purple Bag Project, in which folks can send packages to members of the military serving abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Lionel Richie presented Entertainer of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole Kidman embraced husband Urban and whispered \u201cI love you so much\u201d into his ear when he won Entertainer of the Year. Squee!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>PERFORMANCES<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bryan kicked off the show with a rollicking \u201cWhat Makes You Country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean performed their hit duet, \u201cDrowns the Whiskey.\u201d Twitter was not loving it, with many opining that they \u201csounded off key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Rhett performed an upbeat, interactive version of \u201cLife Changes,\u201d that had him parading through the audience, with a marching band in tow.<\/p>\n<p>Dan + Shay played their smash hit \u201cTequila.\u201d The piano started to burn, NBD.<\/p>\n<p>Kelsea Ballerini delivered a spirited and feisty \u201cMiss Me More,\u201d backed by acrobatic dancers. Twitter ate it up, calling her performance \u201cperfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Old Dominion rocked a mellow but upbeat \u201cHotel Key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Underwood performed a riveting \u201cLove Wins\u201d backed by a dozens of singers and a stunning cosmic light show.<\/p>\n<p>Brett Young sang \u201cMercy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ricky Skaggs showed the young \u2018uns how it\u2019s done with \u201cBlack Eyed Suzie.&#8221; Keith Urban and Paisley joined him and just tried to keep up, playing &#8220;Highway 40 Blues,\u201d and \u201cCountry Boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Midland played \u201cEast Bound and Down,\u201d a tribute to Burt Reynolds, and a song on the soundtrack of Smokey and the Bandit.<\/p>\n<p>Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha performed \u201cMeant To Be.\u201d Twitter was not impressed, writing \u201cthey\u2019re not country,\u201d and moreover, just straight up \u201cbad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Combs sang \u201cShe Got the Best of Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Urban rocked \u201cNever Comin Down\u201d to a smoky and firework-spangled backdrop. He got the crowd on their feet and singing (including wife Kidman).<\/p>\n<p>Garth Brooks performed \u201cStronger Than Me,\u201d a world premiere dedicated to his wife.
