We had a small ceremony.\u00a0 Fake flowers that I still have and love in the bouquet.\u00a0 \u00a0We went for ice cream in Centennial Park after the service before pictures.\u00a0 I slopped chocolate ice cream on my dress.\u00a0 Our wedding song was “Shania Twain – You’ve Got A Way”.\u00a0 I danced with my dad to “Garth Brooks – The Dance”.<\/p>\n
I played our wedding song today as I looked through pictures.\u00a0 Some people in the photos not with us anymore.<\/p>\n
Isn’t it incredible how much we forget about our “big day”?\u00a0 \u00a0It’s so busy.\u00a0 It goes by in the blink of an eye.<\/p>\n
I don’t know about you, but when I got married, I was caught up in the fairy tale of it.\u00a0 The dress and the flowers and the church.\u00a0 I was caught up in the event.\u00a0 Hollywood movies paint marriage to be this incredible romantic event.\u00a0 How many people think\u00a0 – “When I get married, I’ll be happy.”<\/p>\n
What they need to focus on is the day to day that comes after.<\/p>\n
Kids.\u00a0 Finances.\u00a0 Work.\u00a0 Laundry.\u00a0 Dishes. (smile)<\/p>\n
They don’t show that in those sappy rom-coms now do they?<\/p>\n
Maybe those vows should include “in sickness and health, emptying the dishwasher, taking out the garbage without being asked, not complaining when I stay in my pj’s all day”\u00a0 (smile).<\/p>\n
Reality is so different from the Hollywood movies.\u00a0 \u00a0Or the articles in the magazines telling you how to save your marriage, the quizzes that determine whether your marriage is strong.\u00a0 Don’t do it.\u00a0 Don’t believe any of it.\u00a0 It will make you think you’re doing everything wrong.<\/p>\n
I’ve learned a lot over 20 years.<\/p>\n
First – don’t ever compare your relationship to anybody else’s.\u00a0 Your relationship is yours alone.\u00a0 \u00a0It’s like a fingerprint or a snowflake – no two relationships are alike.\u00a0 And you can’t try to be like anyone else.\u00a0 Stop trying.<\/p>\n
Second –\u00a0 say thank you and mean it.\u00a0 Don’t take anything for granted and don’t expect things to be done for you.\u00a0 \u00a0Be appreciative of things that are given and done for you.<\/p>\n
Third – it’s not up to your spouse or relationship to make you happy.\u00a0 That’s on YOU.<\/p>\n

It’s sure not always easy, but it is always worth it.<\/p>\n
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.\u00a0 That’s what they say.\u00a0 And I think that is so true for marriage and relationships.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n
By the way – what does one get to celebrate 20 years?\u00a0 Does anyone “do” presents after 20 years?\u00a0 I used to put a lot of pressure and thought into it.\u00a0 Now I’m just happy to get some time to ourselves and not have to dress up or go anywhere. (smile).<\/p>\n
