You can feel it. Even in the midst of a pandemic, there’s some things about back to school that never change.<\/p>\n
There’s something in the air when it’s back to school time.\u00a0 Yes, the air is a bit cooler.\u00a0 \u00a0Days are shorter.\u00a0 \u00a0Leaves are starting to change colours.<\/p>\n
But there’s something else.\u00a0 \u00a0 There is a feeling that you just can’t explain.\u00a0 Maybe it’s anxiousness.\u00a0 Excitement.\u00a0 Nervousness.\u00a0 Maybe it’s the smell of back to school supplies.\u00a0 New back packs and pencil crayons.\u00a0 There is something about this time of year that brings back so many memories.<\/p>\n
I can remember the feeling.\u00a0 If I close my eyes right now, I can see it.<\/p>\n
I remember back to school so well.\u00a0 I remember getting to shop for back to school clothes.\u00a0 One new outfit.\u00a0 One new pair of shoes.\u00a0 \u00a0The back to school supplies weren’t so important because back in “my day” we got most of our stuff from the teachers.<\/p>\n
I remember the excitement of it all.\u00a0 The nerves.\u00a0 The sleepless night before the first day.\u00a0 \u00a0You were hoping that your friends would be in class with you.\u00a0 You were worried about where you would sit and who your teacher was going to be.<\/p>\n
The first day.\u00a0 \u00a0Our school classroom list used to on the outside wall of the school.\u00a0 Everyone racing to see what class and who their classmates were.<\/p>\n
The new desk.\u00a0 Handing out the pencils and crayons and new notebooks.<\/p>\n
There is just something about the smell of an untouched notebook.\u00a0 \u00a0Holding it in your hand.<\/p>\n
Younger grades were easier.\u00a0 High school was a bit more anxiety filled.\u00a0 Maybe that was just me.\u00a0 Worrying about getting lost (which I did).\u00a0 \u00a0Missing your bus.\u00a0 (which I did).\u00a0 \u00a0Not being able to get into your locker (which I did).\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n
The fear of fitting in.\u00a0 \u00a0Bad clothes.\u00a0 Bad haircuts.\u00a0 \u00a0I’ve done it all.<\/p>\n
But even so, I have so many memories that make me smile.<\/p>\n
And those school supplies.\u00a0 Still\u00a0one of my favourite things about this time of year.\u00a0 The crayons and pencils, notebooks and binders.\u00a0 \u00a0Markers and glue sticks.\u00a0 \u00a0I treat myself to a few new school supplies every year.\u00a0 Even if I’m no longer in the classroom.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n
There is still an excitement that this time of year brings – even if it does look different this year.\u00a0 No, not everyone is starting at the same time together.\u00a0 \u00a0And class will look a little different with masks and social distancing and other safety measures in place.<\/p>\n
It’s a place for learning and making so many memories.<\/p>\n
I hope back to school is a happy time for kids and parents.\u00a0 Whether it’s in the classroom or online.<\/p>\n
I think we’re all craving a bit of routine.\u00a0 I know the adjustment to waking up before the sun will be hard on me as much as it will be on my kids.\u00a0 It’s been nice not having to do that for a while.<\/p>\n
A big thank you to the teachers and school staff, the bus drivers – and everyone else who has been working so hard to figure this out and to be a light to our kids.\u00a0 \u00a0With emails, and videos – it’s helped to make everyone feel much more comfortable easing back into a new school year.\u00a0 \u00a0I can’t even imagine how much extra work it’s taken to get to this point.\u00a0 We appreciate you – thank you.\u00a0 Not only for trying to get through it yourself, but for making it easy on our kids.<\/p>\n
Here’s to a successful school year and another step closer to getting back to normal.<\/p>\n
Wear your mask.\u00a0 \u00a0Wash your hands.\u00a0 \u00a0Be kind to each other.<\/p>\n
Watch out for excited kids on the streets today and those buses that are back on the roads as well.<\/p>\n
It’s been a long March Break!\u00a0 (smile)\u00a0 and it feels good to be going back.<\/p>\n
