Oh my.<\/p>\n
The school year has commenced.\u00a0 But not without a lot of stress and frustration, and a touch of sadness.\u00a0 It’s a milestone year for our family and it has nothing to do with the pandemic.<\/p>\n
Through this pandemic world – with masks, sanitizer, hand washing, social distancing, assigned seating on buses – it’s a big year for my kids.\u00a0 Or for me.<\/p>\n
My oldest daughter is finishing high school this year.\u00a0 I’m not ready to accept that as a parent.\u00a0 \u00a0It means at the end of the school year she could be headed off to college or university, and that could mean out of the house.\u00a0 GASP.\u00a0 I am not ready for that.\u00a0 Not ready for her to leave home.\u00a0 But I know it’s coming sooner than I’d like.\u00a0 Whether I’m ready for it or not.<\/p>\n
My youngest daughter – our baby – started high school today.\u00a0 Big changes.\u00a0 Big adjustments.\u00a0 \u00a0Scary on a regular school day.\u00a0 \u00a0 Isn’t it hard to see our kids go through uncomfortable stuff?\u00a0 You want to take it all away.\u00a0 Save them from all of it.\u00a0 Knowing they have to go through it on their own doesn’t make it easier to watch.<\/p>\n
I told her she has it good.\u00a0 She doesn’t have to worry about running from locker to class four times a day. She doesn’t have to worry about opening her locker in a hurry.\u00a0 \u00a0Forgetting the combination.\u00a0 She has one class.\u00a0 No lockers.\u00a0 \u00a0I’m trying to find the positive in the situation.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n
I know it’s hard on our kids (and teachers) being stuck in the same room all day.\u00a0 \u00a0But as someone who got lost multiple times on her first day of high school, had trouble opening her locker AND almost missed the bus – yep.\u00a0 She might have it a bit easier.<\/p>\n
Anybody else remember their first day of high school?\u00a0 Yep.\u00a0 Shivers. (smile)<\/p>\n
It was a bumpy start to the school year it’s true.\u00a0 Delayed starts.\u00a0 Staggered entry.\u00a0 This past week was a 12 on the stress scale.\u00a0 Trying to figure everything out.<\/p>\n
Thank you teachers.\u00a0 Thank you school staff.\u00a0 \u00a0It’s been a LOT to work through and sort out.\u00a0 And even through all the bumps – we made it.<\/p>\n
This is one for the history books.\u00a0 \u00a0It’s never been done before.\u00a0 \u00a0Our kids will have a better story to tell their grandkids than our “I walked to school, uphill, both ways, in the snow” stories.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n
Which I kinda did.\u00a0 I did walk to school in grade seven and eight actually.\u00a0 It was a good 40 minute walk too. I live to tell the tale.\u00a0 (smile).<\/p>\n
I get that it’s been challenging and we aren’t out of the woods yet.\u00a0 But I remain hopeful.\u00a0 That we will get back to normal and be stronger for it.<\/p>\n
At least my closets will be cleaned and organized.<\/p>\n
