How do you feel about birthdays?\u00a0 I turned 49 on Saturday.\u00a0 With my husband and kids, and my brother and niece.\u00a0 With cake and a campfire, surrounded by beautiful fall colours and lots of love from my family.<\/p>\n

I keep staring at the number 49 and wondering if I should feel any different.<\/p>\n

Someone joked “a year away from the worst year”.\u00a0 \u00a0Someone else said a year away from a mid-life crisis.<\/p>\n

I don’t feel “old” yet.\u00a0 Not even with my grey hair that has grown in.<\/p>\n

We were camping this weekend, and as we celebrated my birthday and Thanksgiving I thought about age.\u00a0 \u00a0When I first started letting my greys take over<\/a> – (as I shared in the blogs)\u00a0 it was very freeing.\u00a0 I embraced it.\u00a0 I loved it. I’ve had so many compliments on my grey hair.<\/p>\n

When the pandemic hit, and hair salons were closed, a lot more women stepped up and did the same thing.<\/p>\n

Now, as I look back on my years and my old me pictures – I miss that colour.\u00a0 I miss the feeling of colouring my hair and enjoying the change.\u00a0 Feeling young.\u00a0 \u00a0So – after a year of change – I’m rethinking it.\u00a0 I’ve had a box of colour in my closet since the pandemic hit and have been considering it for months.\u00a0 Every time I go for the box, I remind myself of just how long it took to get to where I am.\u00a0 It’s not an easy process. So I stop.<\/p>\n

Then, when I saw headlines this weekend – Sharon Osborne doing the same thing<\/a>\u00a0– after going grey and embracing it, she saw herself in the mirror, thought she looked like Gramma Clampett, and after celebrating her 68th birthday -decided to go back to being a red head.<\/p>\n

I know age is just a number.\u00a0 I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard to be young or trying to hard to be someone I’m not.<\/p>\n

My husband says “be yourself – don’t let anyone tell you what to do”.\u00a0 \u00a0Age is just a number.\u00a0 It’s a mindset.\u00a0 It’s about how you feel.<\/p>\n

49.\u00a0 It feels like I was just in school.\u00a0 It feels like not long ago we thought 49 was ancient.\u00a0 I don’t feel ancient.\u00a0 In many ways I feel like I’m really just discovering who I’m supposed to be.<\/p>\n

Each day feels more special.\u00a0 I’m so much more aware at 49 that life is short and it goes way too fast.\u00a0 Each day that passes is a reminder that we have to make the most of it because our days are all numbered.\u00a0 Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow.<\/p>\n

I look back and realize how much time I wasted waiting for something.\u00a0 Waiting til I was out of school.\u00a0 Waiting to be an adult.\u00a0 Waiting to be married.\u00a0 Waiting for the weekend.\u00a0 Waiting.<\/p>\n

If we spend our time waiting, we are missing out.\u00a0 We aren’t living in the moment.\u00a0 I’ve started trying hard to practice living in the moment.<\/p>\n

I feel more than ever I’m embracing each day as the gift it is.\u00a0 I want to do everything.\u00a0 \u00a0I want to try new things.\u00a0 \u00a0I want everyone around me to know they matter.<\/p>\n

I get really excited about birthdays, if you haven’t noticed. (smile).\u00a0 \u00a0Better than New Years.<\/p>\n

It’s a new start.\u00a0 It’s reflection.\u00a0 It’s taking inventory on your life.\u00a0 Being aware of who you are and what matters.<\/p>\n

More and more it’s about simple things.\u00a0 Less drama.\u00a0 More love.\u00a0 Celebrating the everyday.<\/p>\n

I’m excited for what’s to come this year.\u00a0 To finish off my 40’s.\u00a0 \u00a0Maybe with a lovely shade of red to cover my greys. (smile)<\/p>\n

Like the “old” me had on the left (smile)<\/p>\n
