{"id":12333,"date":"2020-12-11T15:36:31","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T20:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/?p=12333"},"modified":"2020-12-11T16:28:05","modified_gmt":"2020-12-11T21:28:05","slug":"feel-good-friday-holiday-traditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/blogs\/afternoons-fridays\/2020\/12\/feel-good-friday-holiday-traditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Feel Good Friday &#8211; Holiday Traditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s another Feel Good Friday, together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lambtonkent.cmha.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Mental Health Association Lambton-Kent<\/a>, sharing ways you can continue to take care of your mental health and things you can do to feel GOOD!<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s #FeelGoodFriday is about the importance of keeping traditions!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We know more than ever that this year\u2019s holiday festivities may look a lot different, but focusing on keeping holiday traditions alive is crucial. Maybe you go tobogganing, or cut down your own Christmas tree, or maybe go and see the Celebration of Lights \u2013 whatever your family traditions are, continuing them can provide you and your loved ones with comfort, make us feel secure and safe, can decrease our stress levels, and allow us to bond with one another.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What is something you look forward to doing every holiday season?<\/p>\n<p><em>We get a real tree every year.<\/em>\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12336 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.briwebapp.net\/2020\/12\/3d54f20d-tree-695x927.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"440\" \/>For a long time now we&#8217;ve been going to a store parking lot and picking one out.\u00a0 The older our kids get, the less they want to come with us.\u00a0 We used to make a day of it.\u00a0 But it gets expensive, and everybody seems to have other plans.\u00a0 And it just seems &#8220;easier&#8221; to go down the street than make it a family adventure day and hit the road to go find the tree.<\/p>\n<p>This year is different.\u00a0 I think we realize the value of family and quality time.\u00a0 I think we realize that busy isn&#8217;t always a good thing.\u00a0 So this weekend, we are making a day of finding the perfect tree.\u00a0 Spending the day together.\u00a0 Making memories.\u00a0 Because now more than ever, it matters.<\/p>\n<p>I love to bake.\u00a0 Last year, I think &#8211; again &#8211; it got too busy.\u00a0 And if you&#8217;re feeling stress or pressure to do it, you don&#8217;t want to.\u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12338 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.briwebapp.net\/2020\/12\/95e21c89-cookies-695x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"313\" height=\"234\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This year, I&#8217;m baking.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m going to start this weekend.\u00a0 So I can actually ENJOY the cookies over the next two weeks.\u00a0 Instead of rushing to get it all done in a day.<\/p>\n<p>My son is 29. He&#8217;s in Calgary where he&#8217;s lived for over five years now.\u00a0 I miss him terribly and it&#8217;s impossible for him to come home right now.\u00a0 When I asked him what he wanted for Christmas, he asked for my Christmas cookies.\u00a0 Which meant more to me than he knows.\u00a0 To me, he&#8217;s searching for the comfort of home.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll watch the same Christmas movies while we bake\u00a0 and decorate the tree.\u00a0 Home Alone.\u00a0 Miracle on 34th Street.\u00a0 The Grinch. And with any luck, I get my way and get to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas.\u00a0 Just like when I was a kid.<\/p>\n<p>My kids still have to wait until we are out of bed on Christmas day to open gifts and see what Santa might have brought.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have pop tarts for breakfast, a tradition from my husbands side of the family.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a turkey dinner, pj&#8217;s all day, and it will be nice and quiet except for when\u00a0 I will push for lots of pictures to drive my family a bit nuts.\u00a0 It&#8217;s what I do.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n<p>Keep your traditions.\u00a0 It matters.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>*****If you are feeling disconnected, stressed or anxious during this holiday season, CMHA Lambton Kent is here for you.
