{"id":13506,"date":"2021-03-09T16:24:06","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T21:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/?p=13506"},"modified":"2021-03-09T16:31:45","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T21:31:45","slug":"the-view-from-here-its-never-just-hair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/blogs\/afternoons\/2021\/03\/the-view-from-here-its-never-just-hair\/","title":{"rendered":"The View From Here &#8211; It&#8217;s Never Just Hair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Arlene Dickinson<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 Dragons&#8217; Den judge and Canadian businesswoman &#8211; spent much of her life doing what a LOT of us have done.\u00a0 She kept her hairstyle based on what she believed would please the men around her.\u00a0 But not anymore.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogto.com\/fashion_style\/2021\/03\/arlene-dickinson-cuts-hair-kept-it-long-offend-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arlene took to social media recently<\/a> to share that she finally decided to cut her hair short after keeping it long for many years.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote &#8211; <strong><em>&#8220;Kept my hair long for years for ALL the wrong reasons,&#8221; &#8220;Was told by the men in my life that men (them) liked long hair on women and so I thought I&#8217;d be somehow OFFENDING them by cutting it. Sorry guys. This hair is for me! (And I love it!) #TheSingleLife.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In her picture she is smiling and looks incredibly happy.<\/p>\n<p>How often do we do that?\u00a0 We change how we look or who we are because we think that&#8217;s how we are supposed to look or how to be.<\/p>\n<p>When my mom died when I was 18, I remember trying hard to fill her shoes.\u00a0 And as I left the house and started a family of my own, I still tried to be like her.\u00a0 Pot roast on Sunday.\u00a0 Different things she did, I would try to do.\u00a0\u00a0The more I tried to be like her, the less I was like me.\u00a0 It was my way of hanging onto her, I guess.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t see that I was losing who I was.<\/p>\n<p>Why do we do that?<\/p>\n<p>Why do we sometimes lessen ourselves to make someone else happy or more comfortable?\u00a0 Why do we hold back our true selves sometimes?\u00a0 \u00a0To be accepted?\u00a0 To be loved?\u00a0 To be valued?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been doing a lot of thinking these past few days about who I am.\u00a0 Who I want to be.\u00a0 Am I being true to myself? That&#8217;s a side effect of working from home in a pandemic.\u00a0 WAY too much time to yourself. (smile)<\/p>\n<p>Arlene Dickenson has inspired me. At the start of the pandemic, I was letting the grey take over and I was successful.\u00a0 I stopped colouring it. Embraced the new found freedom. By October I was so tired of this pandemic and not doing anything or going anywhere, I was looking back on old pictures and decided to just go for it.\u00a0 Bring back some colour.
