Parents.\u00a0 I need<\/em> you.\u00a0 \u00a0I need you to tell me that I’m not alone in my struggles right now.\u00a0 \u00a0I know I can’t complain about working from home when my kids are teenagers.\u00a0 They’re like cats.\u00a0 Self-sufficient.\u00a0 \u00a0(smile)<\/p>\n

But at this point in the school year, interest in school is fading quickly.\u00a0 What’s a parent to do?\u00a0 You want to encourage them to keep going.\u00a0 Finish the year strong.\u00a0 Show up. Do the work.\u00a0 You also know it’s been one heck of a year for our kids and they are as done with this pandemic as we are.\u00a0 \u00a0You want to push them and give them a break at the same time.<\/p>\n

It’s exhausting and it’s frustrating and today I just hit a wall.<\/p>\n

Both my kids managed to miss attendance this morning so I dealt with two back to back calls from the school.\u00a0 To be honest, my first reaction is almost always “In MY DAY….”\u00a0 (smile) “There’s no way my parents would have let me miss a minute of school.”\u00a0 Instead, I left it alone.\u00a0 Walked away.\u00a0 \u00a0Took a deep breath.\u00a0 \u00a0And maybe had a moment alone and shed a few tears of frustration.<\/p>\n

We want the best for our kids.\u00a0 We want to help them and encourage them to do their best.\u00a0 \u00a0But what does that mean right now?\u00a0 \u00a0A school year that started with hope and ambition, studying and getting work done is now about begging and pleading for them to at least get out of bed.<\/p>\n

It’s too much.\u00a0 It’s gone on too long and we are all tired of living life on-line.\u00a0 Teachers, students and parents.<\/p>\n

How do we keep going?\u00a0 How do we not give up?<\/p>\n

My oldest daughter is at the end of her high school career.\u00a0 She needs these credits to earn her diploma and graduate so she can go onto to college in September.\u00a0 Fingers and toes crossed it will actually be IN PERSON learning by then.<\/p>\n

How do we do it?\u00a0 How do we keep our kids paying attention and focused and actually get them out of bed?\u00a0 We talked about this in our last Fox Talks Podcast.\u00a0 Languishing.\u00a0 We’re all feeling that lack of motivation.<\/p>\n

How can we fault our kids when we feel it too?<\/p>\n

Teachers, you have been incredible in changing to online learning.\u00a0 Trying to keep our kids engaged and interested.\u00a0 I’ve been inspired by you and your creativity.<\/p>\n

To all the parents struggling today – I’m sending you a big virtual hug of encouragement and reminding you, you are NOT alone and I’m asking you to send me one back.\u00a0 Because this mama needs it today.<\/p>\n

And for all those kids missing their big grad ceremonies – don’t forget to send pictures in for our online Graduate Yearbook Page<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0 It’s been a year.\u00a0 You worked hard.\u00a0 You did it.\u00a0 You’re amazing. We think you’re pretty cool.\u00a0 Don’t give up on the school year.\u00a0 Don’t stop doing the work.\u00a0 It’s hard to believe it now, but someday down the road, when you’re old like me (smile) you’ll be thankful for what this year taught you.\u00a0 So keep showing up. Preferably on-time so you don’t stress your parents out. (smile).\u00a0 \u00a0Be good to your teachers.\u00a0 \u00a0They’re doing their best.\u00a0 And remember your parents just want you to try your best.\u00a0 And we’re struggling too.\u00a0 Especially with that “new” math.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n

Seriously.\u00a0 Don’t even ask us.\u00a0 \u00a0We don’t understand.<\/p>\n
