{"id":15187,"date":"2021-06-17T15:03:45","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T19:03:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/?p=15187"},"modified":"2021-06-17T15:05:21","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T19:05:21","slug":"the-view-from-here-im-having-a-pity-party-and-you-are-invited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/blogs\/afternoons\/2021\/06\/the-view-from-here-im-having-a-pity-party-and-you-are-invited\/","title":{"rendered":"The View From Here &#8211; I&#8217;m Having A Pity Party And YOU Are Invited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gather round.\u00a0 We&#8217;re having a pity party.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to take a few minutes and just share some frustrations.\u00a0 No &#8220;chin up, stay positive, we&#8217;re in this together&#8221;.\u00a0 Nope.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to be selfish for a minute because sometimes you need to be.\u00a0 Do you know it&#8217;s actually HARMFUL to be positive all the time?\u00a0 It&#8217;s called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/toxic-positivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TOXIC POSITIVITY<\/a>.\u00a0 &#8220;Toxic positivity is an obsession with positive thinking. It is the belief that people should put a positive spin on all experiences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yep.\u00a0 Not today.<\/p>\n<p>Today we are giving ourselves permission to NOT be positive.\u00a0 Nope.\u00a0 Today we are just letting out all the things frustrating us.\u00a0 Like online school.\u00a0 And all the frustrations that go with it.<\/p>\n<p>Parents.\u00a0 I&#8217;m checking on you.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sending you a big high five and reminding you that you are doing amazing. You&#8217;re doing the best you can given the circumstances.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s okay if it&#8217;s not okay.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not okay in my house.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty sure my kids have mentally checked out.\u00a0 I&#8217;m done chasing homework and assignments. And why do our grade twelve students still need their volunteer hours when last year they were cancelled?\u00a0 It&#8217;s been even harder for them this year.\u00a0 I&#8217;m seriously going to fill out the form myself and write &#8220;volunteered to help her mother through dark days, offering words of encouragement and comfort and occasionally chocolate chip cookies.&#8221;\u00a0 200 hours complete and that&#8217;s going to have to work.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not pushing her to find a way to earn volunteer hours when some days it&#8217;s a struggle to get out of bed.\u00a0 #sorrynotsorry.\u00a0 Just a few more days and the school year is over.\u00a0 And here&#8217;s hoping, fingers and toes crossed, that everything is NORMAL in September.\u00a0 AT least get them back IN the school.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers &#8211; thank you.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 \u00a0hope you&#8217;re doing okay.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been one hell of a year and a half for you.\u00a0 \u00a0Back and forth.\u00a0 In classroom.\u00a0 Online.\u00a0 Readjusting lesson plans.\u00a0 Talking to yourself when nobody wants to unmute their mic or turn on their cameras.\u00a0 I have seen the work you&#8217;ve done to keep our kids involved and excited and interested.\u00a0 I have seen you reach out to our kids when they have struggled.\u00a0 I have seen you care about the kids beyond the grade and you are appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>Students &#8211; you are rock stars.\u00a0 You persevered.\u00a0 You adjusted and adapted to all the changes.\u00a0 You helped your parents more than you know.\u00a0 You did great this year.\u00a0 Well done.\u00a0 \u00a0Now please just give us a few more days of showing up and finishing those last projects and assignments.\u00a0 Please.<\/p>\n<p>I hate that I feel uncomfortable and awkward at the idea of doing something I used to love to do.\u00a0 \u00a0Lunch date on the patio tomorrow and I&#8217;m sitting here thinking &#8220;I don&#8217;t know how to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And yes, I&#8217;m exaggerating, because it&#8217;s fun.\u00a0 But seriously.\u00a0 It feels so long since we&#8217;ve done the things we used to do all the time.\u00a0 \u00a0I&#8217;m even rusty when it comes to making excuses to NOT do something.\u00a0 Remember those days?\u00a0 When we avoided going out because we just wanted to stay home?<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s days I don&#8217;t like who I am.\u00a0 I have spent way too much time with myself and it wasn&#8217;t all good.\u00a0 The crap that gets twisted and turned around inside my head is not always productive or positive.<\/p>\n<p>So what are you struggling with today?\u00a0 What has earned you your invitation into our pity party?\u00a0 What&#8217;s got you down?\u00a0 What are you frustrated with today?\u00a0 Own it.\u00a0 Address it.\u00a0 Talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>And then tomorrow, we&#8217;ll be back and feeling our best selves trying to put one foot in front of the other and live our best lives.\u00a0 We hope.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n<p>As always &#8211;
