{"id":16239,"date":"2021-10-20T14:36:51","date_gmt":"2021-10-20T18:36:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/?p=16239"},"modified":"2021-10-20T14:41:07","modified_gmt":"2021-10-20T18:41:07","slug":"the-view-from-here-this-isnt-what-i-signed-up-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/blogs\/afternoons\/2021\/10\/the-view-from-here-this-isnt-what-i-signed-up-for\/","title":{"rendered":"The View From Here &#8211; Not What I Expected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We wait to be grown ups so we can do things we couldn&#8217;t do as kids.\u00a0 Or so we thought.<\/p>\n<p>We thought we would grow up and do anything we wanted, whenever we wanted.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16240 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.briwebapp.net\/2021\/10\/680127b8-adlut-e1634754412709.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We thought we could eat cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner.\u00a0 Who would stop us?<\/p>\n<p>Buy all the candy we wanted and eat as much as we wanted.\u00a0 Because when &#8216;WE&#8221; had money, we could do what we wanted with it.\u00a0 Like buying the whole candy store.<\/p>\n<p>We thought we would stay up all night and sleep all day, watch as much tv as we wanted.<\/p>\n<p>We would grow up and make our OWN rules.<\/p>\n<p>And then &#8211; we grow up.<\/p>\n<p>And then we get hit with the reality of it.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s not nearly as much fun as we thought.\u00a0 Well, maybe just a different kind of fun.<\/p>\n<p>We get sensible, and responsible, practical and logical.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t do the things we swore we would do because we KNOW better.<\/p>\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t that suck sometimes? Do you ever have those days where you just want to stomp your feet and NOT do the adult stuff?<\/p>\n<p>Sit in your pj&#8217;s and not do ANYTHING that you are SUPPOSED to do as a stupid grownup.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re told when we&#8217;re younger that we shouldn&#8217;t rush it.\u00a0 We should enjoy our time.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t fully believe it.\u00a0 We somehow think it will be different for US.<\/p>\n<p>Surprise.<\/p>\n<p>I was getting ready for work this morning, and I was just in a &#8220;mood&#8221; for no reason whatsoever.\u00a0 I was feeling mad about everything.\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16242 \" src=\"https:\/\/storage.briwebapp.net\/2021\/10\/31f448ad-adlutl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"419\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Up early.\u00a0 Getting my daughter to school.\u00a0 Which really just means waking up to make sure she&#8217;s up and out the door.\u00a0 I never have to actually &#8220;do&#8221; anything anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Exercise to feel good and attempt to lose some of these extra pounds that just keep showing up.\u00a0 Uninvited.\u00a0 Mad because I HAVE TO.\u00a0 Even if I should be thankful I GET to.<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast.\u00a0 Counting calories, and portions because, those extra pounds mentioned above.<\/p>\n<p>Planning the day.\u00a0 \u00a0The list of things to do.\u00a0 Planning dinner, throwing in laundry.\u00a0 It never, ever stops &#8211; the laundry.\u00a0 It just keeps showing up.\u00a0 People in our house keep wearing clothes and using towels, and it never, ever stops.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#8217;t part of the big &#8220;plan&#8221; I had in my head when I thought about being &#8220;grown up&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Bills to pay.\u00a0 Stretching the money in the bank.\u00a0 Feeling accomplished by using up leftovers in a creative way that nobody really wants to eat.<\/p>\n<p>Where&#8217;s the cake for breakfast?\u00a0 Cartoons all day?<\/p>\n<p>Can us adults get a time out?\u00a0 Just a random moment where we just call &#8220;time out&#8221; and we take a break from being responsible and adult-like.<\/p>\n<p>Sit in our blanket fort, colouring, eating too much candy.\u00a0 Pretending the outside world is gone and we don&#8217;t have to do the grown up things.<\/p>\n<p>Can someone make that happen?<\/p>\n<p>Once a week?\u00a0 Once a month?<\/p>\n<p>And during that time out we don&#8217;t SEE the dirty dishes in the sink, or the piles of laundry, or the dirty bathrooms that need cleaning, or the dust on the shelves.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t see the bills that need to be paid.<\/p>\n<p>Just one day.\u00a0 And we can shut our brains off so we don&#8217;t feel GUILTY about taking the time-out and leaving the rest of the family to fend for themselves and find the missing shoe, or figure out dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Just imagine.<\/p>\n<p>Blanket forts and Barbie dolls and the innocence of younger, more carefree days.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds good in theory, but if you&#8217;re anything like me, you&#8217;ll realize that all that stuff that makes you want to call a time-out in the first place are the very things you love and wouldn&#8217;t want to go without.<\/p>\n<p>Reach out anytime.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:cbuchanan@blackburnmedia.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cbuchanan@blackburnmedia.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"We wait to be grown ups so we can do things we couldn&#8217;t do as kids.\u00a0 Or so we thought.
