People are gravitating toward a video from Sesame Street from 2004 where the usually kind, patient, loveable and sweet Elmo character absolutely loses it because he loses his favourite cookie to a pet rock that “….doesn’t have a mouth. Rocco’s just a rock. Rocco’s not alive!”

And there’s a silent understanding in the world, and we all feel a little like Elmo in that video. And that oatmeal raisin cookie represents all that we have lost in the last nearly two years, and as much as we’ve been kind and understanding and keeping a smile and a positive attitude – just like Elmo in the now viral video – we’ve all collectively reached a breaking point. Someone keeps taking away our cookie and it’s totally unfair and makes no sense.

We’re all feeling a little like Elmo in that video. Even the most positive of people are struggling right now. And it shows that it’s okay. Elmo is the most positive, loving character on Sesame Street. Who helps teach our kids about all kinds of things – manners, how to talk to friends, sharing. And to see him absolutely lose it over a cookie, is therapeutic for all of us to watch. Even the most patient <del>people</del> muppet can reach a breaking point.

By the way, his feud with Rocco isn’t new. When the rock was first introduced in 1999, it was clear right away that Elmo didn’t care for Rocco – or Zoe’s continued push that Rocco should be treated like something that’s alive. But his recent tweets remind us, that we can still be friends with people even when we have disagreements and don’t share the same point of view.

Well done Elmo.

There are tears in my eyes y’all my stomach hurting pic.twitter.com/bbkF9yDZLf — cheye (dr.booty) (@wumbooty) January 4, 2022 I read an article today about the “Elmo Effect” which I thought was so interesting.
