{"id":23165,"date":"2023-03-10T11:53:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T16:53:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/?p=23165"},"modified":"2023-03-10T12:49:40","modified_gmt":"2023-03-10T17:49:40","slug":"meet-the-man-who-is-walking-for-terry-fox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/blogs\/afternoons\/2023\/03\/meet-the-man-who-is-walking-for-terry-fox\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet The Man Who Is Walking For Terry Fox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A listener sent us a message today to ask if we knew about this.\u00a0 A man by the name of\u00a0Jackson Charron-Okerlund has begun his walk\/ run across the country to raise money for cancer research.\u00a0 He&#8217;s doing it in the name of Terry Fox.\u00a0 \u00a0He started on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>I think it&#8217;s safe to say we know the story of Terry Fox.\u00a0 The man was a bit of a hero to so many.\u00a0 As the Terry Fox Foundation website says, &#8220;Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. After losing his leg to cancer at only 18 years of age, Terry set out to do the impossible: run across Canada, one marathon a day, in pursuit of his dream to find a cure for cancer.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0He called it the Marathon of Hope.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty sure we watched part of it in school.<\/p>\n<p>Terry completed an average of 42 km every day for 143 days, running a total of 5,373 km.\u00a0 That&#8217;s pretty amazing.\u00a0 He started in St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland and ran through 6 provinces to Thunder Bay, Ontario.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote>\n<h2><em>&#8220;Even if I don\u2019t finish, we need others to continue. It\u2019s got to keep going.\u201d<\/em><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"610\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3MoGWYw4B34\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jackson is not associated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/terryfox.org\/our-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terry Fox Foundation\u00a0<\/a>but has been inspired by the man and is doing what he can to raise money for cancer.\u00a0 He has talked with Terry&#8217;s brother and is sharing his journey on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@terryfoxtribute?_t=8aVls1viMRJ&amp;_r=1&amp;fbclid=IwAR0fdm0Y_6R93X7ENIsx_RFqfMFKAxW-0MtkgEPaa-D8lzkjFVojY-Q8Rug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Terryfoxtribute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/terryfoxtribute\/?fbclid=IwAR23WPUFr7rhxAMzQ3Mg0fuYFdYDzPMhHAeP94IkTiFDYz5ZYz3l4OmUF90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a>.\u00a0 He has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/terry-fox-cross-canada-run-for-cancer-research?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&amp;utm_content=undefined&amp;utm_medium=copy_link_all&amp;utm_source=customer&amp;utm_term=undefined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GoFundMe<\/a> to raise money and awareness.<\/p>\n<p>I think it&#8217;s an amazing thing to do and Jackson we admire you for the effort and the attention you are bringing.<\/p>\n<p>If anything, it&#8217;s made me go back and revisit the amazing person Terry Fox was.\u00a0 We get used to hearing about the &#8220;Terry Fox Run&#8221; events and fundraisers that happen year after year in his memory, to raise money for cancer, but sometimes we forget where it started.\u00a0 We forget the full story.<\/p>\n<p>And sometimes, when you get older, you have a greater appreciation for the significance of an event.\u00a0 Look at the website, follow <a href=\"https:\/\/terryfox.org\/terry-fox-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terry&#8217;s journal<\/a> from his run.\u00a0 Be amazed by what this man did to help others.\u00a0 Absolutely amazing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"610\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3BzyHYZgMz8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The annual Terry Fox Run has become a fall tradition in Canada, with more than 650 communities, big and small, urban and rural, English and French, fundraising for cancer research.
