{"id":26866,"date":"2023-10-26T14:08:42","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T18:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/?p=26866"},"modified":"2023-10-26T15:18:52","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T19:18:52","slug":"the-view-from-here-halloween-memories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cfgxfm\/blogs\/afternoons\/2023\/10\/the-view-from-here-halloween-memories\/","title":{"rendered":"The View From Here &#8211; Halloween Is Almost Here!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love this time of year and I love Halloween.<\/p>\n<p>So many memories of trick or treating with friends.\u00a0 Staying up late.\u00a0 Going to as many houses as we could fit in.\u00a0 Tripping on costumes hidden by winter coats.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the hardest part of Halloween in Canada.\u00a0 Most of the time you&#8217;re hiding your costume under your winter coat.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time in our house growing up we had handmade costumes.\u00a0 We got creative. We put things together.\u00a0 One of my favourites of all time was when I dressed up as Boy George.\u00a0 I had long hair that my mom helped braid into dozens of braids with ribbons throughout.\u00a0 A big hat.\u00a0 I used one of my dad&#8217;s workshirts and painted it with numbers to look like one of Boy George&#8217;s outfits.\u00a0 I loved it.<\/p>\n<p>I also remember being followed by a Frankenstein one year.\u00a0 I think he just lingered at the end of a driveway to intimidate all the trick or treaters.<\/p>\n<p>I remember those old costumes.\u00a0 We only ever had those once or twice.\u00a0 I remember being a Tweety Bird one year.\u00a0 Those flimsy plastic and the masks with the elastic that always broke early on.\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-26868\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.briwebapp.net\/2023\/10\/9891fa39-remember-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"393\" height=\"220\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;d be trying to hold your mask over your face, you couldn&#8217;t breath or see very well, but you didn&#8217;t want to lose that one piece of your costume that was actually visable to the world so when you knocked on the door you didn&#8217;t have to keep explaining what we were supposed to be.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n<p>One hand on the mask, the other on the candy bag.\u00a0 Holding on to that bag for dear life.\u00a0 Free candy was and always will be the best thing in life.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n<p>We would get home and dump everything on the table.\u00a0 My parents would carefully examine it.\u00a0 \u00a0There was always something wrong with the Snickers and Peanut Butter cups.\u00a0 (smile)\u00a0 They would always be removed.\u00a0 \u00a0My brothers and sister and I would compare.\u00a0 \u00a0Trade the ones we didn&#8217;t like for the stuff we did.\u00a0 We&#8217;d sort by type.\u00a0 Chocolate, chips, suckers.<\/p>\n<p>Good memories of Halloween over the years, that&#8217;s for sure.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26867 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.briwebapp.net\/2023\/10\/6a9522e2-homemade-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I was a mom I tried to make my kids costumes.\u00a0 One year I tried to make my daughter a bat out of a black umbrella and turtle neck.\u00a0 My youngest was a butterfly.\u00a0 That is one of\u00a0the only attempts I ever made at a do-it-yourself.\u00a0 I would only get frustrated.\u00a0 \u00a0It always seems easier than it ease when you have no skills.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n<p>Now that the kids are older things are different for sure.\u00a0 \u00a0My kids are the ones handing out the candy to the trick or treaters that come to our door or they have plans with friends.\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s different.<\/p>\n<p>I almost miss those days of running around, trying to get everything done for the big night.<\/p>\n<p>Almost. (smile)\u00a0 Halloween on a weeknight was always a challenge.\u00a0 Trying to get home from work in time to feed everyone and get them all dressed up.\u00a0 Knowing the costume idea had changed a hundred times since a week ago.\u00a0 Hoping nothing would fall apart and you didn&#8217;t forget anything.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got our candy ready.\u00a0 Well, it&#8217;s hidden away so I don&#8217;t eat it.\u00a0 Hoping to get some of those molasses kisses.\u00a0 Love the Twix bars, the Coffee Crisp and Caramilk Bars &#8211; but Mr. Big will always be my favourite.\u00a0 Rockets.\u00a0 Mmmmm.\u00a0 Love them too.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll make some mummy dogs for our Halloween dinner.\u00a0 Maybe with some chili.\u00a0 \u00a0It looks like Halloween is going to be cold.\u00a0 And my kids promised they would watch my favourite Halloween movie with me &#8211; Hotel Transylvania.\u00a0 Love it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><em><strong>For those looking to get ready for Halloween night &#8212;<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>Corunna Library hosting a fun event &#8211; come visit <strong>Corunna&#8217;s Haunted Library<\/strong> on Friday October 27 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Dress in your costume and enjoy games, crafts and the spooky Dr. Bookenstein room &#8211; if you dare!<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>New Horizons Community Church is hosting a Trunk Or Treat event on Saturday from 2pm &#8211; 4pm.\u00a0 Come dressed in your best costume.\u00a0 Candy, popcorn and hot chocolate.<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Parkway Church in Corunna is hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareparkway.com\/events\/2023\/10\/29\/trunkortreat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trunk or Treat<\/a> this <strong>Sunday October 29th 5pm &#8211; 7pm<\/strong> &#8211; FREE candy and FREE BBQ<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>There&#8217;s one more weekend for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reapersrealm.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reapers Realm<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/harmonyforyouth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harmony for Youth&#8217;s\u00a0 Haunted House<\/a> continues this weekend.<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Sarnia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/802759703884696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celebration of Frights Haunted Halloween Tour<\/a> is back for another year.\u00a0 These are self-guided tours.\u00a0 Click the link and get a map of all the spooky places to see in our area.\u00a0 Big thanks to those homeowners who go above and beyond so we can really get the most out of his holiday.\u00a0 So fun.\u00a0 And now I know which ones to avoid because I hate being scared.\u00a0 (smile)\u00a0 I say that with love and respect.\u00a0 I seriously hate being scared.\u00a0 There are three different tours you can take yourself on &#8211; some have characters, and some have donation bins to help fill the shelves at local food banks.<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Amazing to see community come together like this.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you do as you get ready for Halloween &#8211; enjoy yourself!\u00a0 Have fun!\u00a0 and here&#8217;s to finding clearance candy on November 1st.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I love this time of year and I love Halloween.
