Our youngest daughter just graduated from high school.\u00a0 GASP.\u00a0 I was okay during the ceremony but today, rewatching the videos and looking at the pictures, I’m feeling all the feelings.<\/p>\n
So many big changes coming.\u00a0 College in the fall.\u00a0 \u00a0The path to a lifelong career possibly right around the corner.<\/p>\n
What advice do you have for parents about to become empty nesters?\u00a0 What advice do you have for college bound kids?<\/p>\n
I remember leaving high school and not feeling ready AT ALL for being an adult.\u00a0 I was 17 when I graduated high school.\u00a0 I’m not even sure I wanted to go to college.\u00a0 It just seemed like the next step.\u00a0 I remember the end of high school trying to figure it out.\u00a0 Come up with the answer to that question “What do you want to be when you grow up?”\u00a0 or “What do you want to do with the rest of your life?”<\/p>\n
Um, gulp, I don’t really know?\u00a0 Because I don’t even have plans for the summer yet.\u00a0 I don’t even know who I am yet.\u00a0 Because trying to answer that question feels scary and impossible and the fear of making the wrong decision is sitting heavy on my shoulders.<\/p>\n
I remember having three choices – business, early childhood education and radio.<\/p>\n
The business application process seemed to be a lot of work.\u00a0 Early Childhood Education – I didn’t really feel drawn to that.\u00a0 But radio?\u00a0 Now that was a program I was drawn to.\u00a0 Radio, Television and Journalism at Lambton College.\u00a0 RTJ.\u00a0 \u00a0I loved music.\u00a0 All music.\u00a0 The only thing I was worried about? I was incredibly shy and not outgoing at all, which is one of the things I thought was required in radio.<\/p>\n
In the end, that’s what I chose.\u00a0 I graduated in 1991.\u00a0 I’ve been working in radio ever since.<\/p>\n
I never left home though.\u00a0 I stayed at home and drove back and forth.<\/p>\n
I look at my daughters and hope that I have taught them all they need to know to get by in the world.\u00a0 I hope they go after their dreams.\u00a0 I hope they are confident in their choices and go on to make a difference in this world.<\/p>\n
