Our first, official – Wellness Wednesday!

I wanted to do something to help anyone who might be feeling overwhelmed by the weight of the world right now.

Cost of living is crazy. There is a lot of heaviness around us with world events, and in our own community.

I think we are all still reeling from the death of Dane Nisbet in the tragic shooting that took place a few weeks ago.

I wanted to give space for that and knew I couldn’t do it alone. Life’s Seasons Care & Support offers trauma based counselling to our area. And they offer their counselling services on a sliding scale making it affordable for EVERYONE which matters.

My story? My family went through tragedy in July of 1990 when my mom, brother and sister were killed in a car accident. I lived with that for decades. Staying busy. Staying distracted. Until covid hit, I turned 50 and suddenly couldn’t handle the weight of it anymore.

You can’t hide from big hurt no matter how busy you keep yourself. I’m glad I reached out. I was able to share my story, share my grief and was able to understand that it was trauma. I was able to understand how to live with it. How to process it. How to share it. And for the first time I felt understood, listened to, and my feelings were validated.

Taking care of our mental health is so important. We need to remove the shame and stigma from seeking help from a professional. We need to stop putting on a brave face and pretending we’re okay when we’re not. And honestly, you don’t have to be broken to seek counselling. Maybe it just helps with the day to day heaviness.

Over the next few weeks we’re going to get into some deep discussions about trauma, counelling and how to handle life when it’s heavy.

This week we talked about how to cope after tragedy in the community. The recent shooting at the Lambton College pub affected all of us in some way.

One of the greatest things we can do when it comes to taking care of ourselves, and focusing on wellness, is moving our bodies.

Today we got to talk to Paul Skuza – General Manager – of the Jerry McCaw Family Center YMCA. He joined us in studio to share a few fun exercises we can do no matter how small our workspace is.

We talked about the importance of movement when it comes to our physical health, and finding fun with fitness through many different programs offered at the Y.

We want to give you the chance to win a FREE one-week membership at the Y.
