My daughter texted me this morning a question to which I replied “ok” and I guess that’s big wrong. And she thought I was “big mad”.<\/p>\n
I’m 48.\u00a0 A mom of three.\u00a0 My youngest is 13, and I am doing my very best to try to understand the teen language and trying to keep my head above water.\u00a0 Still be “cool” and relevant and understand what they are saying.<\/p>\n
Some days I fail miserably.<\/p>\n
I thought “ok” was an ok response to a question.<\/p>\n
Instead my daughter\u00a0 replied with “you gotta add ‘ay’ at the end now it just sounds like you’re mad”<\/p>\n
To which I was so confused.\u00a0 I wasn’t mad.\u00a0 I was just saying “ok” – as in “sure, yes I’ll do that for you”.\u00a0 \u00a0 I thought I was just answering the question. In a positive, non angry way.<\/p>\n
How can two letters be seen as an angry response when the majority of texts are in code for me anyway?\u00a0 As in — btw,\u00a0 ttyl,\u00a0 atm, and other responses I can’t remember because I still text with real words, AND I use periods which is another no-no.<\/p>\n
I was told once “why do you use periods?\u00a0 nobody does that”<\/p>\n
Or capitals or even proper sentences.<\/p>\n
Wow.\u00a0 When did I get so old?\u00a0 I type real words, whole words, with capitals and punctuation.\u00a0 Sometimes I don’t send a complete thought and will use …\u00a0 – as in, to be continued.<\/p>\n
That’s wrong too.<\/p>\n
It’s like a cry for help.\u00a0 Which is certainly how I feel some days (jokes) but not the intention when I use it in writing or texting.<\/p>\n
It’s confusing for sure trying to stay relevant and on top of the teen speak.<\/p>\n
