<\/p>\nEverybody needs a best friend.\u00a0 Someone to laugh with, do silly things with, share life with.\u00a0 Someone to confide in.\u00a0 Someone to lean on.\u00a0 Someone to encourage you when you need it and to talk some sense into you when you need it more.<\/p>\n
I have a lot of really good friends, but I don’t think I can truly say I’ve had a best friend since my younger days.\u00a0 Angela was a friend I grew up with in the big city of Streetsville.\u00a0 We spent all our free time together.\u00a0 Hanging out.\u00a0 Listening to music.\u00a0 Talking. Laughing.\u00a0 We collected rocks together.\u00a0 We grew into teenagers together.\u00a0 We talked about boys together.\u00a0 Then at the end of grade eight, my parents announced we were moving.\u00a0 Really moving.\u00a0 Hours away.\u00a0 \u00a0I ran out of time and I ran out of courage and I couldn’t face her to say goodbye.<\/p>\n
That was in 1984.<\/p>\n
I had really great friends in high school and into college.<\/p>\n
But Angela was the one who knew all.<\/p>\n
In 2010, she found me online and sent me an email, hoping I was the “Carrie Buchanan” she was looking for.\u00a0 Then circumstances for me started changing, life got really hard, and she showed up.\u00a0 All those years later.\u00a0 It’s like she knew I would need her.\u00a0 So crazy.<\/p>\n
She showed up.\u00a0 She drove hours to see her old best friend.<\/p>\n
To take her shopping and take her out and to remind her who she used to be.\u00a0 Before life got hard.<\/p>\n
That’s the power of a best friend.\u00a0 No matter how many years pass.\u00a0 Husbands, kids, career.\u00a0 Big loss. Big heartbreak.\u00a0 There she was.\u00a0 \u00a0To remind me of who I used to be and the timing was perfect.<\/p>\n
We had a sleepover and stayed up late talking and laughing.\u00a0 \u00a0Like 30 years hadn’t really passed.<\/p>\n

Everybody needs a best friend.<\/p>\n
I look at my kids and I don’t know if it’s fair to blame technology but I don’t see my kids having the same kind of friendships.\u00a0 \u00a0Friendships don’t seem to have the staying power anymore.\u00a0 And it makes me so sad.\u00a0 Is it because we lack true connection?\u00a0 Is it something else? Is social media taking the place of true friendship?\u00a0 Are we just not investing in people the way we used to?<\/p>\n
I tell my kids all the time – no matter who you have in your life – a boyfriend\/ husband (down the road of course) a girl always needs her best friend.\u00a0 \u00a0That is just a role her spouse can’t fill.<\/p>\n
She needs that person that really knows her and gets her.\u00a0 I only wish my girls could find their “person”.\u00a0 \u00a0Someone who would stay.\u00a0 Someone to share this crazy life with.<\/p>\n
Do you have a best friend?\u00a0 Someone you can talk to about anything?\u00a0 Do you still remember your best friend from years ago?\u00a0 Do you have a “person”?\u00a0 An “Angela”?\u00a0 in your life?<\/p>\n
I hope so.\u00a0 Because they are so good for your health!\u00a0 Did you know a strong social support will boost your happiness, improve self confidence and increase your sense of belonging and purpose.<\/p>\n
Friendships may extend our lives.
\nFriendships help to keep our minds sharp.
\nOur friends make us generally healthier.
\nOur best friends get us through the tough times.
\nFriends influence us, whether it\u2019s good or bad!<\/p><\/blockquote>\nAnd I would never turn down the chance to make new friends.\u00a0 Oprah!\u00a0 If you’re up to it, I would love the chance to “hang” and just chat.\u00a0 Michelle Obama.\u00a0 Julia Roberts.\u00a0 My doors are always open to new opportunities.<\/p>\n
