Darius Rucker Refused The Star Treatment When He Switched To Country
May 20, 2021 7:00 pmDarius Rucker was a superstar with Hootie & the Blowfish when he transitioned to country music in 2008.
But instead of riding in like a big shot expecting special treatment, he did the opposite and paid his dues all over again.
He talked about it on Clint Black’s upcoming series “Taking In Circles”.
“[In] the very first meeting about the record I said ‘What do you do if you’re the low guy? What do you do if you’re the new guy? They were like, ‘Well, you do a radio tour. But we didn’t think you would do that.’ And I said, ‘Light it up.'”
Darius did a massive radio tour because he wanted to earn his way onto the airwaves like everybody else.
“[I] was like, ‘if you play my song, great. If not, hey man we had a beer, it was cool.’ We went around with that attitude, and people liked the song.”
That song was his first #1 country hit, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It”.
Clint’s “Talking in Circles” episode with Darius debuts May 22nd on the Circle Network.
