How To View The Space Station In The Night Sky
May 27, 2020 7:47 amHow to be SPACE DAD….
Or Space Mom – Make this summer un-forgettable for your family by sighting
the International Space Station from Sarnia in the night sky PLUS Live Earth-
views 24/7 from orbit!
Yeah, check out McNeill the space-nerd, but imagine this….
You’re sitting around the campfire with friends and family, the stars are out,
and with about 10 minutes to spare before the International Space Station
flies overhead and a bright spot of light across the milky way, you gather the kids
|around. “Want to see the Earth, right now from SPACE?”.
Well of course they do!
So, you tap a link, and there it is, our blue planet, growing dim as the space-station
swoops around it’s orbit into the night sky.. towards where you are now.
You watch from orbit as the sun sets dramatically behind the Earth.
You tap the next link.
There’s the map of the Earth. There’s the Space Station. To the right is Ontario and
the Great Lakes, cast in a parabolic shadow of night… that’s you.
You set the tablet down, and point at the Northwest sky, about 1/3 of the way up from
the treeline. You know the exact minute and where to look.
“Watch… here it comes….”
And there it is, a bright moving star, a blip of light.
The source of that spectacular view, and the home of a handful of astronauts
from many nations working together – at this very moment. There’s the space
station. It’s real. It’s there. Now imagine seeing this unfold as your 8 year old self.
If you’ve never looked down at a high definition LIVE video feed of Earth, as it is right
at this moment in real-time,Take a moment to do so HERE.
I’ve included all the links to do the above in this blog post, and I hope you’ll share
this with family and friends. For quick reference you can bookmark it.
For even quicker reference, just copy the URL and paste it into a facebook DM to yourself,
so you can pull this page up when the time is right.
Consider this… That you are more than likely the very first person in the succession of
all of your ancestors reaching back into the very depths of time- with ability to access
such a view, with such ease.
What you’re looking down on is our one and only Earth, from a height of 403
kilometers, from an internationally built and operated space station travelling
above us at over 27,600 km/hr.
Through our open and free society, this view is made freely available to whoever
should so wish to glance down for the first time in history from above and open
their mind and imagination and take in this breathtaking view. From this height,
here are no visible borders, no signs of hatred or conflict and no context really,
of our daily struggles and problems. At this height, in the cold, airless void there
is only this beautiful blue oasis of life. And this view, this achievement of humanity,
is shared freely with you.*
For best results, view the HD ISS Live Cam with THIS Space Station Tracker which
shows youthe ISS’s current position and expected orbit tracking for the next couple
spins around the Earth. It also lets you know what part of the Earth you’re looking at.
There are at least 3 different HD cameras that switch periodically.
The views can be breathtaking.
And for NIGHT TIME sightings of the Space Station w/ the naked-eye, from your
backyard, campground or bonfire, This Link is like a bus-schedule for overhead
International Space Station flybys OVER SARNIA! It shows you where to look in
the sky, and for how long you’ll be able to follow that little blip of light, aboard
which there are living and working fellow human beings up in orbit, up in space
at this very moment.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: What an amazing time to be alive!
