23/65 – The Bridge That Love Built (Ball’s Bridge & Little Lakes Road)
August 21, 2023 7:40 am“Love can build a bridge
Between your heart and mine
Love can build a bridge
Don’t you think it’s time?”
Those are a few of the lyrics from the 1990 hit song “Love Can Build a Bridge” by the Judds.
Little did they know, love had in fact built an actual bridge way back in 1885 on Little Lakes Road, about 9 km west of Goderich. Ball’s Bridge, also known as “the Bridge that Love Built”, is one of the most beautiful and romantic landmarks in Ontario. It’s a 250 foot, two span bridge and according to folklore, is largely the result of a young man’s love for a local girl. You can hear more about that in the podcast this week.
We did a photoblog on the bridge in the summer of 2022 and now a little more than a year later we’re
catching up to find that the struggle to protect the irreplaceable culture, history, agriculture and
biodiversity of the area continues. Our guests this week are Rebecca Garrett and Jennifer Morris … the fight to Save Historic Ball’s Bridge & Little Lakes Road.
Milli and I paid a quick visit to the bridge last week with our cameras. Please check out the carousel of pics of this beautiful landmark and some important links below.
