{"id":8997,"date":"2020-06-15T10:00:17","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T14:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cjwffm\/uncategorized\/2020\/06\/lady-a-could-face-legal-trouble-over-name-change\/"},"modified":"2020-06-15T10:00:17","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T14:00:17","slug":"lady-a-could-face-legal-trouble-over-name-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/briwebapp.net\/cjwffm\/blogs\/country-music-news\/2020\/06\/lady-a-could-face-legal-trouble-over-name-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Lady A Could Face Legal Trouble Over Name Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"video-shortcode embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"610\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/caDLnjX2NsE\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>On the heels of their official name change from Lady Antebellum to Lady A, the trio is being taken to task &#8212; and possibly facing a lawsuit &#8212; from another entertainer who goes by the name Lady A.<\/p>\n<p>Seattle-based blues singer Anita White, who is African-American, is professionally known as Lady A and has released several albums over the last couple decades.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, she took the group to task on social media.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"insta-iframe\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CBV4fZjH42x\/embed\/captioned\" width=\"auto\" height=\"auto\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display:inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height:0;\"  class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><\/span><\/iframe>\n<p>White told Rolling Stone,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is my life. Lady A is my brand, I\u2019ve used it for over 20 years, and I\u2019m proud of what I\u2019ve done. This is too much right now. They\u2019re using the name because of a Black Lives Matter incident that, for them, is just a moment in time. If it mattered, it would have mattered to them before. It shouldn\u2019t have taken George Floyd to die for them to realize that their name had a slave reference to it. It\u2019s an opportunity for them to pretend they\u2019re not racist or pretend this means something to them. If it did, they would\u2019ve done some research. And I\u2019m not happy about that. You found me on Spotify easily \u2014 why couldn\u2019t they?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>White also said that she holds a business trademark for Lady A LLC and is planning to speak with an attorney soon to discuss her options.<\/p>\n<p>The group Lady A announced their official name change on Thursday, June 11th stating in part,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We are regretful and embarrassed to say that we did not take into account the associations that weigh down this word referring to the period of history before The Civil War, which includes slavery . . .&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far, Lady A, formerly Lady Antebellum, have yet to comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On the heels of their official name change from Lady Antebellum to Lady A, the trio is being taken to task from another entertainer who goes by the name Lady A.
