The combination of financial pressure, loss of childcare and health concerns is exceedingly challenging for families. Mental health problems are on the rise as a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S2215-0366(20)30168-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secondary effect of COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and the ongoing measures that have been put in place in an attempt to contain it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The potential long-term consequences on children from increased parental stress, anxiety and depression are only beginning to be understood. However, past research tells us that the children exposed to these problems are more likely to experience mental health problems themselves, in addition to developing an increased risk of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s10995-013-1418-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning and behaviour problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ES_20190131_Reeves_Maternal_Depression2.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced economic mobility throughout their lives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies are reporting that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jad.2020.07.126\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant mothers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and those\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jad.2020.07.081\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with young children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0are experiencing three- to five-fold increases in self-reported anxiety and depression symptoms. A history of mental illness, current domestic conflict and financial stress were associated with worse mental health across multiple child age groups. These figures are especially concerning because young children are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pmed.1001442\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly vulnerable to maternal mental illness due to their near total reliance on caregivers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to meet basic health and safety needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High rates of parental mental illness combined with children spending more time at home due to COVID-19 present\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/0145935X.2016.1104037\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.neubiorev.2017.07.003\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alterations in children\u2019s stress-system function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> higher rates of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/S0954579413000813\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical health problems and cognitive impairments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parenting stress associated with mental illness can lead to negative interactions, including harsh discipline and being less responsive to children\u2019s needs. For parents, depression contributes to health problems and low quality of life.
