Actor + Singer + Songwriter + Helicopter Pilot = Smash Success!
July 13, 2019 6:46 amHis parents wanted Kris to join the U.S. military, and he did. He took with him his award winning fiction writing skills, and considerable athletic achievements. He became a helicopter pilot, and attained the rank of captain. When his tour of duty was over, he left the military to pursue a career in music, and his family disowned him.
In 1965, he moved to Nashville and worked a variety of odd jobs including sweeping floors at Columbia Records. He met June Carter there and asked her to give Johnny Cash one of his tapes. She did, but Cash put the tape in a pile.
A few weeks later, Kris landed a helicopter in Cash’s yard. The tactic worked, and Cash recorded, “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down”, and Kris won songwriter of the year!
