His parents wanted Kris to join the U.S. military, and he did.\u00a0 He took with him his award winning fiction writing skills, and considerable athletic achievements.\u00a0 He became a helicopter pilot, and attained the rank of captain.\u00a0 When his tour of duty was over, he left the military to pursue a career in music, and his family disowned him.<\/p>\n
In 1965, he moved to Nashville and worked a variety of odd jobs including sweeping floors at Columbia Records.\u00a0 He met June Carter there and asked her to give Johnny Cash one of his tapes.\u00a0 She did, but Cash put the tape in a pile.<\/p>\n
A few weeks later, Kris landed a helicopter in Cash’s yard.\u00a0 The tactic worked, and Cash recorded, “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down”, and Kris won songwriter of the year!<\/p>\n
