Every American with a cell phone will receive a “presidential alert” text message today at 2:18 PM.
It’s a test of a system that would issue a warning about a crisis, such as a missile launch, or a tsunami.
The message will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
The test was originally scheduled for September 20th, but was pushed back two weeks because of ongoing response efforts to Hurricane Florence, according to FEMA.
And no, Trump won’t be able to use the system to broadcast his tweets. The law states, “The public alert and warning system shall not be used to transmit a message that does not relate to a natural disaster, act of terrorism, or other man-made disaster or threat to public safety.” President Trump will have sole responsibility for when the emergency system will be used.
On October 3 at 2:18 pm, FEMA will send its first nationwide test of its presidential alert system, which lets the president send a message to every phone in the US in the event of a national emergency https://t.co/FB3zxb0utn
