Sy Sperling, the founder and client, of Hair Club for Men, died Wednesday after a “long illness.” He was 78 years old.
Sperling founded Hair Club for Men in 1976 because he was losing his own hair, and got sick of wearing toupees. He started it with just $10,000 in credit card debt and a hair weaving technique he learned from a stylist.
He went national in the early ’80s, with his now-legendary TV commercials where he admitted, “I’m not only the Hair Club president, but I’m also a client.”
He also started Hair Club for Kids, “providing hair free of charge to children under 18 who lost their hair from chemotherapy.”
Sy retired in 2000, after selling the company for $45 million.
