Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is paying engineers and contractors a lot of money to build a massive, multi-room clock inside a mountain in West Texas.
The clock will tell time for the next 10,000 years. The clock is designed to tick just once a year and chime once per millennium. It’ll be 500 feet tall, and “all mechanical, powered by day / night thermal cycles, and synchronized at solar noon.”
So far, the clock has cost $42 million to build.
Bezos explained the clock as a way to remind people that the far future not only exists, but will happen to their descendants.
