The Lou Marsh Trophy was handed out yesterday to Canada’s Athlete of the Year.
Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Bayern Munich left back Alphonso Davies were named co-winners.
Duvernay-Tardif won the Super Bowl as a starter with the Chiefs before becoming the first NFL player to opt out of the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He chose to volunteer in a long-term care facility in Quebec at the height of the pandemic’s first wave.
The 20-year-old Davies became the first Canadian to win a Champions League men’s title.
It is the third tie in the 82-year history of the award. The most recent tie was in 1983 with wheelchair athlete Rick Hansen and hockey star Wayne Gretzky.
Mount Everest is higher than we thought.
A joint survey conducted by China and Nepal has revised the official height of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. It has now been agreed that the height is 8,848.86 metres or 29,032 feet, making Everest a bit taller than it used to be. About 2 feet taller.
The two countries had previously disagreed on the height of the mountain. Chinese surveyors then climbed the peak in spring this year, when the mountain was closed by both countries for other climbers due to the coronavirus pandemic. Both countries sent teams to climb the mountain using GPS and also trigonometry to make the final calculations.
Many believe an earthquake in 2015 which killed nearly 9,000 people in Nepal might have altered the height of Everest.
