The Chatham Goodfellows Porch Light campaign was a huge success last night.
Volunteers were spread throughout the community collecting cash, toys and food to make sure No Child is Without a Christmas this season. $50,087 in cash was collected this year!
The annual Goodfellows newspaper Street Sales are next weekend (December 10 & 11) outside of local businesses supporting the campaign. For more information or to volunteer go to ChathamGoodfellows.ca.
Today is Giving Tuesday, a movement to create an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season after the commercialization of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
The website Mashable championed the first Giving Tuesday in 2012, many more companies have jumped on in the years since.
Big jump in new positive COVID-19 cases locally, 39 were reported Monday by Chatham-Kent Public Health.
There were 13 resolved cases, the total active case count locally is now 83.
Ontario reported 788 new cases, down from 964 Sunday. According to Public Health Ontario data, the 5 to 11 age group has the most new cases of COVID-19. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore says 6.4% of chidren 5 to 11 in the province have been vaccinated in the first few days.
Merriam-Webster just announced its word of the year for 2021, and the word is: vaccine.
Searches for “vaccine” on Merriam-Webster.com were up 601% compared to last year, and over 1,000% compared to 2019.
The runners up this year include insurrection, infrastructure, perseverance (because of the Mars Perseverance rover) cicada, meta and woke.
Their word of the year in 2020 was pandemic.
Oxford English Dictionary recently named “vax” their word of the year.
