Gordon Lightfoot died last night. He was 84.
Many consider him to be Canada’s greatest singer-songwriter. Lightfoot’s cause of death has not been made available.
Born in Orillia, rose to fame in the 1960s following the debut of his 1965 album Lightfoot! Lightfoot recorded no less than 20 studio albums with songs that include Early Morning Rain, If You Could Read My Mind and Sundown.
His 1975 song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald told the story of a Great Lakes ore freighter that sank in Lake Superior during shipping season. It was recorded in one take.
We’re deeply saddened by the loss of 1998 Inductee Gordon Lightfoot. His music leaves behind an everlasting legacy in the hearts of Canadians everywhere. Our condolences to his loved ones, friends, and fans.
