Today is Star Wars Day. May the 4th (…Be With You) is the unofficial holiday celebrating the Star Wars franchise.

May 4 is when Star Wars fans celebrate one of their favorite times of the year. It’s a play on the famous “May the force be with you” line from the 1977 film that spawned a massive franchise.

The classic slogan was originally used on May 4, 1979 to celebrate Margaret Thatcher’s election win to become Britain’s first female prime minister. To celebrate her victory, her party took an advertisement in The London Evening News that read, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!”

Happy 55th birthday to the Big Mac! Today in 1968, the Big Mac debuted at McDonald’s.

The Big Mac: two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickle, onions on a sesame-seed bun, was introduced after it was test-marketed by a McDonald’s restaurant franchisee in Pittsburgh.

The owner came up with the idea in 1967 when McDonald’s was trying to come up with a larger sandwich for adults. It was an instant success. The test showed the Big Mac accounted for a significant share of his total sales and had increased overall restaurant sales by double-digit percentages.

It’s estimated that 73 million Big Macs are sold across Canada every year. Since it was introduced it has become the most popular item on any menu anywhere in the world.
