May 5th is the 125th day of the year. There are 240 days remaining until the end of the year.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, a military victory in 1862 over the French forces of Napoleon III. It isn’t a Mexican holiday at all, but rather an American one created by Latinos in California during the Civil War.

Today is also Dutch Heritage Day in Canada. This is just the 5th year it’ll be celebrated after the federal government adopted a motion from then Chatham-Kent-Leamington MP Dave Van Kesteren in April 2019.

It is meant to honour the sacrifices made by Canadian veterans who gave their lives fighting for the Liberation of Holland, which took place on May 5, 1945.

The annual John McGregor Secondary School Plant Sale is this weekend.

Tomorrow at the school (300 Cecile Ave, Chatham) from 8 til noon.

The greenhouse will be full of ornamental plants and veggie garden starters. Cash only, rain or shine.

Canada’s Wonderland opens for the season today. This is the park’s 42nd year.

Two new rides will join the over 200 other attractions, including a 20-acre water park, that opens later this month.

England’s King Charles III will be officially crowned in a traditional ceremony Saturday.

Thousands will gather at Westminster Abbey and the surrounding streets of central London to take in a display of British pageantry.

The ceremony itself is set to begin at 11am in the UK, 6am for us.

CBC and CTV coverage will begin at 4am.

The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby, dubbed “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” is set for Saturday.

Last year, long shot Rich Strike stunned the crowd to win the race.

The race is known as The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports for its approximate run time. The Derby is also referred to as The Run for the Roses due to the garland of more than 400 red roses draped over the winner.

The Mint Julep is the drink of choice for Derby-goers; More than 120,000 are served each year. The most fashionable headgear also is on display, as roughly 90% of female attendees embrace the time-honored tradition of big hats at the race track.

Post time is 6:57pm Saturday on TSN.
