Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, an annual campaign created to end overdoses, remember those who have died from an overdose, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind.

This year’s theme focuses on “Recognizing those people who go unseen” and it is about acknowledging people in our communities who are affected by overdose but might go unseen in the crisis.

According to Statistics Canada, a total of 7,328 opioid toxicity deaths occurred in 2022. This is an average of 20 deaths per day and is up substantially from 2019 when the average number of deaths per day was 10. While each death is a tragedy, the impact it has on first responders, family, friends and the community at large can be devastating and long lasting.

There are two events locally to mark Overdose Awareness Day. They are taking place at the James Street Drop-in at 719 James Street in Wallaceburg and the new ROCK Mission building at 39 Richmond Street in Chatham.

Both events will be held from 4-7p.m. and will have music and food along with Naloxone training and a memorial component to remember those who died from drug overdose.

It’s Trivia Night at Sons of Kent in support of Rise House International.

Cost is $20 per person at the door. Trivia begins at 7pm with some awesome prizes to be won.

The Harrow Fair opens today for their 169th year.

The four-day event features a wide range of activities including a horse show, a parade, the midway, lawn tractor races, live entertainment, and much more.

Merlin’s Michelle Wright will be performing at 8p.m. on Saturday.

Admission to the Fair is $12 for adults, and children 12 and under are free to enter. More information and a schedule of the Harrow Fair events can be found by clicking here.
