For the first time ever prize money will be introduced at the Summer Olympics in Paris later this year.

Track and field will become the first sport to introduce prize money, announcing Wednesday it would pay $50,000 to gold medalists. The International Olympic Committee is setting aside $2.4 million to pay the gold medalists across the 48 events on the track and field program. Relay teams will split the $50,000 between their members. Payments for silver and bronze medalists will start at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The modern Olympics began as an amateur sports event and the IOC does not award prize money. However, many medalists receive payments from their countries’ governments, national sports bodies or from sponsors.

Canadian track and field medal winners receive p$20,000 for winning gold, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze. This money is awarded through the Canadian Olympic Committee Athlete Excellence Fund, and would be in addition to the IOC funds.

In sports like tennis and golf, the Olympic tournament is the only time in a season that many pro players compete for free, with medals on offer but no prize money.

On Wednesday, the NFL announced their first ever game in Brazil.

Other than those two games, that’s all that is known about the 2024 schedule. The league usually releases the full season schedule in early May.
