When you tune in to the Tigers or Blue Jays tonight, you might have a tough time identifying your favourite player.
They’ll all be wearing the same number; 42.
That’s in honour of Jackie Robinson. 77 years ago today, in 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play in a regular season Major League baseball game.
Fifty years later, in 1997, the Number 42 was permanently retired throughout all of Major League Baseball. That was Jackie’s number when he was with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
The last guy to wear it was Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera. He retired in 2013, the same year Chadwick Boseman played Jackie in 42.
Stanley has released a limited edition line of Mother’s Day tumblers.
