The Big Mac turned 56 on Saturday! In 1968, the Big Mac debuted at McDonald’s.
The Big Mac: two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickle, onions on a sesame-seed bun, was introduced after it was test-marketed by a McDonald’s restaurant franchisee in Pittsburgh.
The owner came up with the idea in 1967 when McDonald’s was trying to come up with a larger sandwich for adults. It was an instant success. The test showed the Big Mac accounted for a significant share of his total sales and had increased overall restaurant sales by double-digit percentages.
It’s estimated that 73 million Big Macs are sold across Canada every year. Since it was introduced, it has become the most popular item on any menu anywhere in the world.
