The Orionid meteor shower will peak again tonight.
According to NASA, the Orionids peak in mid-October every year. The Orionid meteors come from one of the most famous comets, Halley, which is currently near the middle of its 76-year orbit around the sun. Halley’s Comet won’t make its appearance until 2061, it leaves a trail of debris behind that our planet passes through every year, resulting in the Orionids.
Orionid meteors are extremely fast, plummeting into the Earth’s atmosphere at about 66 kilometres per second. Because they move so quickly, these meteors can sometimes leave light trails in the sky while others produce bright fireballs.
Look up in the sky after midnight for the best view.
