After a damp Sunday, drier weather moves in for the start of next week according to Environment Canada. Mostly cloudy today with some cooler temperatures, high today is 12C with a 40% of showers late this afternoon.
Sunshine for the rest of the week, with a high of 13C. Maybe some rain late in the work week.
Today is Remembrance Day, commemorating the end of WWI at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
It’s the 106th anniversary of the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany in France.
It’s observed in Canada & the UK, and in Belgium & France as Armistice Day.
The tradition is to observe 2 minutes silence at 11am.
There will be ceremonies across the municipality of Chatham-Kent to pay respects to veterans and current Canadian military members.
Here’s what’s happening on Monday, November 11:
Chatham
Royal Canadian Legion Branch #642 will host the tribute for Chatham.
The parade will form at the Legion at 10:30 a.m., before marching off at 10:45 a.m. The parade will end at the Cenotaph, where the service will be held.
Blenheim/Erieau
The Remembrance Day parade will form up at 10:30 a.m. at the Legion before marching down George Street to St. Mary’s Hall.
After the 11 a.m. service at St. Mary’s Hall, the parade will return to the Legion to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph.
In Erieau, a service will be held at 2 p.m. With everyone set to meet at 1:45 p.m. at Molly & O.J.’s Restaurant.
Both services are being hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #185.
For those interested in learning more about the area’s military past, the Blenheim Military Museum & Resource Centre will be open on November 11, between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Bothwell
Bothwell’s ceremonies will be held by Canadian legion Branch #252.
A service will be held at the Cenotaph at 11 a.m.
There will also be a Roast Beef Supper held at the Legion from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The cost is $25 for an adult and $10 for children aged 10 and under.
Dresden
Legion members will meet at the fire hall at 10:45 a.m. before marching to the cenotaph. At 11 a.m., a ceremony will take place including two minutes of silence, the laying of wreaths, and a fly-over.
At 6:30 p.m. on Monday, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #113 will host a banquet for $15 per ticket.
Merlin
Royal Canadian Legion Branch #465 in Merlin has a number of events planned.
On Monday, the parade will march from the Legion to the cenotaph to Merlin Community Hall. The Remembrance Day service starts at 10:50 a.m.
Ridgetown
Ridgetown’s parade will begin at the Legion and end at the cenotaph, with a service to start by 11 a.m.
Following the service, lunch and refreshments will be available at Royal Canadian Legion Branch #243.
Tilbury
Tilbury’s Remembrance Day service is hosted by Royal Canadian Legion Branch #206.
It will start at 10:50 a.m. at the Cenotaph at Canal Street East.
Wallaceburg
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #18 Wallaceburg will be hosting a Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph.
That service starts at 10:55 a.m. and is followed by refreshments at the Legion.
Before that, at 9 a.m., there will be a marching of the colours, student performance, and laying of wreaths at Wallaceburg District Secondary School.
Wheatley
Participants of the Wheatley Remembrance Day Parade will meet at 10:15 a.m. at Mercer’s Service Centre. The parade will form up and march for the Cenotaph at 10:30 a.m.
The service will take place at 10:45 a.m. and is hosted by Royal Canadian Legion Branch #324.
Here’s a list of what’s open and closed today:
Schools, grocery stores, and retail stores will be open. The LCBO and The Beer Store will be regular hours.
Banks and Federal offices will be closed. There will be no mail delivery today.
Municipality of Chatham-Kent offices and some services will be closed in recognition of Remembrance Day.
CK Public Health, EarlyON programs, museums, CKTickets box office, Entegrus and libraries will be closed.
Garbage and recycling pickup will not be affected. All leaf and yard depots and transfer stations will be open regular hours. All arenas will be open.
All Ride CK Transit services will be operating.
The Salvation Army Chatham Kent is looking for Red Kettle volunteers.
Kettles will be on the streets beginning Thursday. Funds raised directly support local families and children in need.
