The Chatham Goodfellows’ annual Porchlight Campaign is Monday.

Hundreds of volunteers will go door to door, seeking donations to ensure their slogan stays true, “No Child Without a Christmas.” The volunteers will wear their red Goodfellows aprons, flip your porch light if you have a donation on and expect to see them knocking on your door anytime after 5:30 p.m.

More information and how to volunteer online at chathamgoodfellows.ca.

If you are in need of assistance with food or toys this year, call the Goodfellows from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday at 519-354-1146.

It’s Black Friday. Depending on who you ask it was given the name because so many people went out to shop that it caused traffic accidents and sometimes even violence or because retailers finally begin to turn a profit for the year. In accounting terms, when you start turning a profit it’s called “in the black.”

The National Retail Federation says 116 million people are expected to shop today. 67 million will shop tomorrow on Small Business Saturday.

39% of Americans want Black Friday to be declared a national holiday and a paid day off.
