Canada’s toll-free, three-digit suicide prevention helpline turned one over the weekend.
Launched on November 30, 2023, people having suicidal thoughts or other mental health distress can call or text 988 to reach a trained responder 24 hours a day, seven days a week — no matter where they live in the country.
In its first year, 988 responders in communities nationwide have answered more than 300,000 calls and texts. Responders in Ontario answered an average of more than 12,000 calls and texts per month. The average wait time in October was 44 seconds for phone calls and one minute and 47 seconds for texts; they’re looking to improve on those times.
The network is designed to link helpline users with a responder as close to home as possible. So when someone reaches out, they are getting a response from someone as close to home as possible. The 988 helpline is available in English or French. No one will be turned away.
The 988 helpline expanded on the existing Talk Suicide Canada helpline. It had a toll-free 10-digit number and did not have 24-hour texting service.
About 12 people die by suicide in Canada every day, that’s about 4,500 lives lost each year. More than 200 people in Canada attempt suicide every day.
Two tickets matched all seven numbers on last nights big Lotto Max draw. They will split the $80 million dollar jackpot. It’s just the second time ever that the jackpot reached that level.

It’s a long way from baseball season, but the Intercounty League Toronto Maple Leafs are making headlines.
They have made history by signing of Ayami Sato. She will be the first female player to compete in a Canadian professional baseball league. Regarded as the best female pitcher in the world — and by some, the greatest female player of all time. She consistently throws at speeds approaching 80 miles per hour, and her curveball boasts a spin rate higher than many Major League Baseball players.
Sato and the Maple Leafs will return this season to take on the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers at Fergie Jenkins Field when the season begins in May.
