January 20th is the 20th day of the year. There are 345 days remaining until the end of the year.

Environment Canada is warning residents to be prepared for very cold conditions with temperatures “colder than those that have been seen the last several years.”

An arctic surge making its way from the Prairies is expected to bring a 12 degree temperature swing to Ontario this week.

Daytime highs over the next four and a half days will be in the minus double-digits but it will feel more like -24 or colder in some areas with the wind chill.

It will be partly cloudy and bitterly cold today. A few lake-effect snow showers this afternoon and last into the evening. Today’s high is -12C, windchill will make it feel like -24C.

Southwestern Ontario isn’t alone in dealing with the incoming polar vortex.

The Florida Department of Transportation is getting snow plows ready for a possible freeze in the state. The freeze is expected to bring ice and possibly snow this week to the Panhandle and Northern and Central Florida.

The preparations are unusual; Not since back in the 80s and 90s, when several Winter storms brought an inch or two of snow to Central Florida. Orlando International Airport last recorded snowflakes in 2016.

South Florida is not forecast to see any wintry weather, but cool and wet conditions are expected with a high of about 20 degrees (68) later this week.

Donald Trump will be sworn in (again) as the 47th president of the United States today.

Trump will take his oath of office on what will likely be the coldest Inauguration Day in 40 years. The temperature at noon is expected to be in the low 20s (about -6C), which is about 20 degrees below normal.

Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will be sworn into office inside the US Capitol Rotunda. The last president to be sworn in indoors was Ronald Reagan in 1985, when daytime temperatures dipped to 7 degrees with a windchill of -25 degrees.

Country music stars Carrie Underwood, Billy Ray Cyrus and Jason Aldean, rapper Nelly and musician Kid Rock are all scheduled to perform at inauguration-related ceremonies and events. Actor Jon Voight and wrestler Hulk Hogan are also expected to make appearances.

The best season ever for the Detroit Lions is over.

The Lions turned the ball over five times in a 45-31 loss on Saturday night to the Washington Commanders.

Next weekend the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Buffalo Bills, and the Commanders will play the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday for the chance to move on to the Super Bowl in New Orleans February 9th.

In college football, Notre Dame and Ohio State will play for the national championship tonight in Atlanta.

Today is Blue Monday which is supposed to be the most depressing day of the year. A British psychologist came up with it in 2005.

Although it was debunked soon after it was created it continues to resonate today.

It’s called Blue Monday because it’s the perfect mix of all of the factors that make us depressed: Bad weather, high debt from the holidays, the realization of just how far away next Christmas is and how far away we are from our next vacation, failing on our New Year’s resolutions and low motivation at work.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) posts an annual survival guide online that acknowledges there’s no scientific basis for Blue Monday, but notes that its premise rings true, especially amid shrinking daylight hours and the arrival of holiday bills mid-January.
