February 6, 2025 5:55 amFebruary 6th is the 37th day of the year. There are 328 days remaining until the end of the year.
Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for Chatham-Kent and most of the region yesterday afternoon, it has been lifted, but the damage is done.
Snow mixed with freezing rain fell over night, making this mornings drive dicey. We could see some flurries this morning and some more freezing drizzle. Today’s high is 3C, -3 with the windchill.
If you missed it Wednesday morning, Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff announced the six new names of the Name a Snow Plow contest on CKMORNINGS.
This year’s winners were heavy on local sports connections with shoutouts to a local junior hockey team, an NHLer from Chatham-Kent, and a local Intercounty Baseball League franchise.
The winning entries for the 2024 contest, which closed on December 13, are as follows:
Brutus Blade (named after the Blenheim Blades mascot)
Snow Stormer (in honour of the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers)
Ski.J. Brodie (in honour of NHLer TJ Brodie)
Bob Blizumi (in honour of legendary Canadian fisherman Bob Izumi, who grew up in Blenheim)
Steve Pin-snow (in recognition of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Steve Pinsonneault — who was also a long-time municipal councillor in Chatham-Kent)
A sixth name has also been selected — honouring a longtime Kent County snow plow driver. It will be unveiled after the family is notified.

The Super Bowl is Sunday in New Orleans, and the prices on tickets are dropping.
The cheapest ticket has fallen below $4,000 on the secondary market, a 30% decline in the past week — and more than 50% cheaper compared to last year’s record-breaking Super Bowl ticket price.
Last year’s game between the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers was the most expensive on record, partly because it took place in Las Vegas for the first time. Fans are saying New Orleans “doesn’t have the same appeal”. The Caesars Superdome also has a larger capacity, pushing prices lower.
Football fans are also “bored”, according to experts, with the Chiefs third straight appearance. “Had the Detroit Lions, Washington Commanders or Buffalo Bills made it this far, it’d be a much different story as it relates to current prices.”
Team Canada coaches are coming to Windsor-Essex in search of Olympians.
On April 26, fifteen coaches will be scouting athletes. Athletes between the ages of 14 to 25 will be placed in “flights” to go through each stage of testing. They will all be ranked and the top athletes will qualify for the National qualifiers.
There is no cost to register, the event will happen at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse at the Toldo Lancer Centre on the University of Windsor campus. Click here to sign up.
Astronomers in Chile have spotted a massive asteroid with a 1.3% chance of hitting Earth in 2032.
They say it’s around 100 meters, or just over 300 feet wide; Not big enough to be a planet killer, but it wouldn’t be good. According to Space.com, it would create a massive crater, destroying buildings up to nine miles away, shatterring windows more than 60 miles away and triggering a massive earthquake that would destroy stuff over a much larger area. It would also kick up a ton of dust and debris that would linger in the atmosphere. If it hit the ocean, it would cause a massive tsunami. An asteroid half this size hit eastern Russia in 1908 and flattened 80 million trees over an area of about 800 square miles.
One expert said he expects it to “pass by harmlessly.” He said it “just deserves a little more attention with telescopes until we can confirm that.” Because of its orbit, we might not know for sure until 2028.
