King Charles read a speech from the throne Tuesday, which sets out the government’s priorities for the current session of Parliament.
King Charles said Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government vows to protect Canadian sovereignty by building up the military and redefining the relationship with the United States. The speech mentioned Canadian sovereignty several times and the King finished his address by saying, “As the anthem reminds us, the true North is indeed strong and free.”
The King is the first reigning British monarch to read the speech from the throne since his mother Queen Elizabeth II delivered the speech in 1977.
Charles was the first monarch to use the new throne in the Senate of Canada building.
The royal couple arrived in Ottawa Monday afternoon, and we’re on a flight out by 1:30 the next afternoon.
The 2025 Detroit Grand Prix is this weekend.
The Ambassador Bridge will remain operational as usual. The Windsor-Detroit tunnel will remain open, but traffic will be re-routed so that motorists won’t have to enter and exit the tunnel through the race route.
Crossing into the U.S.is simple, drivers will immediately take a right turn onto Jefferson upon exiting the tunnel and head to I-375. Entering Canada from the U.S., the best route is also I-375 to Jefferson Avenue and follow posted signage to reach the tunnel.
There will be route changes for the weekend to Transit Windsor’s tunnel bus service; buses will head into Detroit, but do a loop at Mariners’ Church. Buses won’t actually go into the city. Riders will be dropped off at the tunnel entrance to walk to their destination.
