August 14th is the 226th day of the year. There are 139 days remaining until the end of the year.

The heat wave has finally broke. Since about Friday afternoon we’ve been dealing with a Heat Warning with very humid conditions in Chatham-Kent.

Comfortable day today, before the heat is back for the weekend. Sunny skies today with a high of 28C, that will feel like 34. Much the same on Friday; Saturday the heat is back with a chance of some showers on Sunday.

Should be a nice night for a couple of local concerts…

In Dresden, the Rotary Club hosts the Summer Concert Series. Timesless will take the stage at 7.

The Summer Concert Series will continue tonight in Blenheim at Talbot Trail Place.

Come by tonight to see Freedom Train beginning at 7 p.m.

Today is Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen.

Net proceeds from each Blizzard sold goes to local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

For the 23rd year in a row, Dairy Queen’s across Canada will donate net proceeds from every blizzard treat sold and all contributions will stay local to help kids in our community.

Kodak, the 133-year-old photography company, might not survive much longer.

The company has some doubts they’ll be able to keep the doors open, saying it might not have enough cash or financing to cover about $500 million in debt.

Kodak’s roots go back to 1879, when George Eastman was awarded his first patent and later introduced the Kodak camera, promising, “You push the button, we do the rest.”

Twenty-two years ago today at 4:11p.m. 50 million people to lose power in the northeastern United States and Ontario.

It was the worst blackout in North American history.

A series of failures in Ohio triggered the blackout. A system monitoring tool was not working, then a generating unit tripped off in an overloaded portion of the grid, and then overheated transmission lines began sagging into overgrown trees and tripping.

By the time officials realized the system was in jeopardy, it was too late to intervene and the collapse sent unsustainable loads into neighbouring jurisdictions.

Most places restored power by midnight (within 7 hours), while full power in New York City and parts of Toronto wasn’t restored until August 16th.
